Choose by the experience you want
“Classic medieval RPG” is not one play style. These four games point toward different kinds of first experience, so your preferred mix of party adventure, writing, older RPG conventions, or exploration is a more useful guide than age or reputation alone.

Which game should you play first?
Start with Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for a party adventure
This is the clearest starting point if what you picture is a fantasy quest with a party and D&D framing. Beamdog says the Enhanced Edition was released in 2012; that date identifies the edition, not the age of the original game. Beamdog’s description is a useful check that this is the kind of RPG you have in mind.

Choose Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition for writing and unusual themes
If dialogue and unconventional fantasy ideas matter more to you than a familiar heroic adventure, Beamdog’s official description makes Planescape: Torment the strongest fit among these picks. It specifically emphasizes the writing and the game’s inversion of established RPG and fantasy tropes. Read Beamdog’s description for that narrative emphasis.
#1 Best Overall
- Overhauled Character Creator – Create more lifelike characters with improved facial detail, body shapes, and visual fidelity
- Shared-Progression Cross-Play Cooperative Play – Both players now save all main story progress as long as they’re on the same “New Game” and have defeated a similar number of main bosses within one. Both players retains all loot, 100 percent vigor, and can revive each other in all online sessions.
- Free Friend’s Pass – Invite any friend to join your adventure in online co-op even if they don’t own the game. Friends keep loot and character progress, plus get full offline access to the tutorial and character creator
- Revamped Combat and Movement – V2.0 adds smoother animations, better weapon response, refined lock-on, improved evasions, and new grievous strike prompts
Pick Daggerfall for open-world exploration
Choose Daggerfall if the draw is a vast world seen from a first-person perspective. Bethesda describes its 1996 game as a massive 3D world to explore, and Steam’s current listing identifies it as a free-to-play, single-player RPG.
Try Ultima VII if the edition itself appeals
Ultima VII: The Complete Edition is a reasonable choice if you want to explore an older RPG and prefer a listing that presents it as a complete edition. EA’s product page confirms the RPG classification and edition wording, but it does not provide enough detail to compare its current compatibility or mechanics with the other games here. Check EA’s listing before choosing it for a particular modern setup.

What “Enhanced Edition” tells you—and what it does not
Beamdog says that since Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition launched in 2012, it has worked to bring classic RPGs into a contemporary era with new functionality, content, and accessibility across platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android. That is a broad statement about Beamdog’s work, not a game-by-game compatibility or accessibility guarantee. It does not establish how well a specific title works on your device or compare the usability of these four games.
Likewise, the official descriptions support broad differences in identity—party adventure, narrative focus, a complete-edition entry, and open-world exploration—but do not provide a reliable like-for-like comparison of combat systems, difficulty, playtime, or accessibility. If one of those details determines your choice, check the specific current product listing before buying or installing.

Physical editions and collections
Beamdog announced physical and digital console releases for the Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition Pack and a Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition / Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition pack on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The announcement documents those releases historically; it does not confirm current stock, price, or availability in any region. See Beamdog’s announcement and verify a retailer’s current listing for the platform and region you want.
For a wider physical collection, Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls Anthology page describes a collectible PC box set containing five games and official add-ons. It is a broader collection rather than a recommendation for a first game; its page does not establish current retail availability. Bethesda’s anthology page has the collection details.
