Reports also describe demands for a more transparent process to choose the next Election Commissioner, with civil-society participation; one outlet separately reported that CJP wanted the 2023 appointments law repealed.
The word “tomorrow” in the original headline referred to October 2, 2026. The Associated Press reported that hundreds of CJP supporters protested in Mumbai that day. The available post-event report does not confirm that the protest took place at Shivaji Park.

Here, CJP means the Cockroach Janata Party, not Citizens for Justice and Peace. The demands reported ahead of the protest addressed accountability for the CEC, the voter roll, and the appointment of his successor. They are reported party demands, not findings that wrongdoing occurred.

What happened to the October 2 protest?
Before the event, Hindustan Times reported a planned 4 p.m. start near Gate 6 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park. Free Press Journal reported that police had denied permission to use Shivaji Park and that CJP said it would proceed. After October 2, the Associated Press reported that hundreds of supporters protested in Mumbai. That report does not establish the protest’s location, so the planned park venue should not be presented as confirmed.
Before the protest, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke warned in a post on X, as quoted by Hindustan Times: “If we are denied the right to protest, CJP will launch a Jail Bharo Andolan in Mumbai on Gandhi Jayanti.” This was a pre-event warning; it is not evidence that a later arrest campaign took place.

What allegations were behind the protest?
The Associated Press framed the demonstrations as pressure over voter-list revisions. It reported critics’ allegations that the Election Commission’s changes to registrations benefited the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, and also reported that the Commission and government denied wrongdoing. The cited reporting does not resolve those allegations.

The AP also reported that a newspaper account said two commissioners had formally objected to decisions involving voter-list revisions, registration procedures and digital systems. The Election Commission disputed that description, calling the internal discussion “differing views and deliberations,” rather than formal written objections. These are competing characterizations reported by the AP, not a finding that settles what occurred.

The Indian Express reported that CJP threatened nationwide protests if Kumar did not resign and attributed to the party the accusation that he was “undermining” voter rights. That wording is CJP’s claim, not an independently established conclusion.
