The latest clearly documented Citron NEO tagged release is dated April 27, 2026; its notes list rendering and audio fixes, expanded firmware 22 compatibility, and other technical changes. A newer NEO nightly, build e23318de6, is listed for July 25, 2026, but a nightly is not the same as a stable release. The name also covers separate project lines: the original Citron’s last clearly documented stable release is from March 12, while Citron NEO is the more visibly active continuation.

Which Citron project received the update?

There is no single, uninterrupted release stream to call simply “Citron.” The original project and Citron NEO publish through different repositories, so the project name, build identifier, and release date matter when checking an update.

  • Original Citron: its release page lists Citron 2026.03.12, dated March 12, 2026. The repository also has a “final build” commit dated February 19, 2026, leaving the status of later activity in that line unclear. Original Citron releases · Original Citron repository
  • Citron NEO: the project publishing through the citron-neo GitHub organization has a tagged release dated April 27, 2026, and a later nightly listed in its guide. It appears to be the more active Citron-related development line, but the available project information does not establish a formal legal or corporate succession from the original project. Citron NEO releases

For the April update, the relevant build is Citron NEO’s April 27 tagged release, commit 0076ee8. The later build e23318de6, dated July 25 in NEO’s guide, is a nightly. Check the project’s release or CI page for any newer build before downloading: those dates identify the versions documented here, not a guarantee that they remain the newest. Citron NEO guide

What changed in the April 27 Citron NEO release?

The release notes describe fixes and compatibility work, not a measured performance uplift. Their practical implications depend on the game, device, drivers, and settings.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
  • Tomodachi Life and grass rendering: the notes say Tomodachi Life renders correctly and grass rendering was fixed. These changes may address visual defects in affected scenes; they do not establish flawless play or completion on every system.
  • Audio stability: several audio-related crashes were addressed. That may help in situations exercising the affected audio paths, but the notes do not quantify how often crashes occurred or how much stability improved.
  • Firmware 22 compatibility: compatibility was expanded. This is not a claim that every title requiring that firmware will boot, nor does an emulator update supply the system files a user may need.
  • Mipmap handling: a fix to mipmap levels may improve how textures are selected at different distances or resolutions, where the issue applies.
  • FFmpeg and Unity builds: FFmpeg was substantially updated, and Unity-build support received fixes. The release notes do not quantify multimedia gains or promise compatibility with every Unity-based game.

Original Citron’s separate March release focused on renderer quality, shader correctness, UI customization, external Updates/DLC directories, and platform or build stability. Those changes belong to that release line, not the April NEO changelog. Original Citron release notes

Tagged release or nightly: which should you choose?

Build Date and identifier What it means
Original Citron stable release March 12, 2026 — 2026.03.12 Latest clearly documented stable release in the original project’s release list.
Citron NEO tagged release April 27, 2026 — commit 0076ee8 A named release with published notes, including the changes described above.
Citron NEO nightly July 25, 2026 — build e23318de6 A newer development build listed by the NEO guide; do not treat it as stable unless the project labels it so.

A tagged release is generally the more cautious choice when a working setup matters more than trying the newest code. A nightly may include newer fixes, but development builds can also introduce regressions. The NEO guide points users to the page for the exact tag or nightly for its changelog and compatibility information. Citron NEO guide

Where to get an official build

Start at the project-controlled pages and follow their links to a release or CI artifact. Use the NEO guide for its current build directions, the NEO releases page for tagged builds, and the NEO CI repository for build targets. The original Citron releases page is for the older, separate release line.

Avoid repackaged APKs, “preconfigured” bundles, ROM/key/firmware packs, and downloads from sites with no verifiable project connection. Be wary of an installer that demands unexplained logins or surveys, or tells you to disable antivirus protection.

Platforms and the caveats that matter

Citron NEO’s CI materials list Windows, Android, macOS, and Linux builds. Linux artifacts include x86_64, x86_64-v3, and ARM64/aarch64 variants. The guide also describes desktop and handheld use cases, including Steam Deck-style Linux environments, and macOS on Intel or Apple silicon. A build being available for a platform does not mean games perform or behave equally across devices. Citron NEO CI targets · Citron NEO platform guide

  • Windows: choose the build matching the system and follow the project’s current instructions; GPU drivers and graphics settings can affect results.
  • Android: chipset, graphics drivers, memory, and thermal limits can make performance vary substantially between phones and tablets. A game that launches on one device may not behave the same on another.
  • macOS: distinguish Intel from Apple silicon when selecting a build. Availability for both does not establish identical game compatibility or performance.
  • Linux: select the matching architecture. The CI repository flags a class of Wayland issues affecting Qt6 applications, which can appear as freezes or crashes; this is a possible environment-specific problem, not proof that every Linux setup is affected. Citron NEO CI notes

How to update without losing a working setup

  1. Identify your current project and build. Check whether you use original Citron or Citron NEO, and note the version or commit. Do not assume a download with “Citron” in its name is interchangeable.
  2. Back up your data. Save copies of emulator configuration, save data, controller profiles, and any shader cache you want to preserve. Keep the existing installation available as a fallback.
  3. Get the build from the project’s official page. Match the package to your operating system and CPU architecture, then install or extract it separately rather than immediately overwriting the working build.
  4. Launch and check paths and settings. Confirm the game directory, controller mappings, graphics backend, firmware or system-file paths, and Updates/DLC directories. Check where the new build stores user data; a different directory can make existing games or settings appear to be missing.
  5. Test one familiar game. Verify save visibility and normal operation before moving your full setup. If a game or setting fails, restore the old build and backed-up configuration.

An update can rebuild shader caches, which may mean longer first launches or temporary stutter. If performance is unexpectedly worse, compare the same title and settings against the previous build; a changed graphics default, driver behavior, thermal throttling, or a nightly regression are also possible causes. Revert if a problem is repeatable, and report it with the device, operating system, emulator build, graphics backend, and steps that reproduce it.

How to judge game compatibility

Citron NEO’s compatibility repository uses categories including Perfect, Playable, Ingame, Intro/Menu, and Won’t Boot. A status is not useful without its context: check the exact game, update or DLC version, emulator build, operating system, graphics backend, and whether the report is verified or user-submitted. “Boots” or “reaches gameplay” is not the same claim as “playable” or “completable.” Citron NEO compatibility list and reporting process

Legal use and system files

Citron’s documentation describes the emulator as an independent project for homebrew and legally obtained software, and says it is not affiliated with Nintendo. Users are responsible for their own use and for obtaining any games or system files lawfully. The installation documentation does not provide instructions for obtaining firmware, keys, or copyrighted game files. Citron documentation · Installation documentation · Terms of use
