Google appears to be preparing a way to pin frequently used languages in Google Translate, making them quicker to find in the language selector. The feature was reported in March 2026, but it has not been confirmed as a general release. “Fixed translation mode” is not an established Google feature name, and the available evidence describes a language-selection shortcut—not a new translation mode or engine.

What the reported feature would do

A report published on March 9, 2026, found an in-development “Pinned languages” section in Google Translate for Android. The idea is straightforward: add languages you use often to a dedicated area near the top of the language-selection screen, so you do not have to search or scroll through the full list each time.

The report, based on an investigation of Android app version 10.8.48.878519627.2-release, says users could pin up to 10 individual languages. That is a reported limit on languages, not evidence of a limit of 10 source-and-target pairs. The report does not provide a confirmed, public set of instructions for adding or removing pins. What “fixed translation mode” does not mean

The reported change appears to be a navigation convenience. It does not establish that Translate will keep translating continuously, lock a source and target language together, disable source-language detection, or improve translation accuracy. Nor does it show that every Translate tool will offer the same pinned-language list.

Google has separately announced Gemini-related translation updates, including contextual translation features. Those are distinct from a shortcut for selecting languages; the pinned-language report does not describe a change to the translation engine. Is it available, and which devices are covered?

The discovery concerns the Android app, but finding a feature in an app build does not establish that it has launched. The report does not confirm a general rollout date, and Google’s public Android listing does not announce pinned languages in its listed features or release notes. An app update alone may not enable a feature that is still being tested or activated gradually. Google Translate on Google Play

There is no confirmation in the available sources that the feature is available on iPhone, iPad, or the web. Google’s existing help pages and product overview document Translate tools on different platforms, but do not document this new pinned-language interface. Google Translate product overview

If you do not see a pinned-languages section, there is no verified menu path to turn it on. The absence of the option does not necessarily indicate a problem with your phone or app.

Why pinned languages could be useful

Google’s Android listing advertises text translation across 108 languages, but that headline count should not be read as support for every language in every feature. With a long language list, a favorites area could reduce repeated scrolling for people who regularly use the same languages.

  • Travelers could keep the languages they need for a trip near the top of the selector.
  • Families and workplaces could make recurring language choices easier to reach.
  • Students and multilingual users could avoid repeatedly searching for languages they use in regular practice or conversations.
  • Users of less-common languages could benefit if their languages are otherwise harder to locate quickly.

These are practical uses implied by the design, not reasons Google has publicly given for developing it.

Ways to make Translate quicker to use now

Add the Android widget

Google’s Translate widget puts shortcuts on the Android home screen. Depending on the available toolbar options, it can provide access to Search, voice input, Conversation, Transcribe, Camera, and clipboard translation. Google says the widget requires Android 5 or later and the Translate app. Google’s widget instructions

Use history and saved translations for recurring phrases

Translate’s history and saved translations can keep useful phrases close at hand—for example, an address or a frequently needed travel instruction. They preserve translations or phrases, rather than pinning languages in the selector. Google explains how to access them in its Translate help page.

Try Tap to Translate for copied text

On Android, Tap to Translate lets you copy text in another app and open a translation from the Translate bubble, without switching to Translate and pasting manually. It works with copied text, not images. Google documents the setting under Settings → Tap to Translate; on Android 10 and later, the relevant option may be labeled Paste. For Pixel 6 and newer, Google also documents a Show floating icon option. Google’s Tap to Translate instructions

Download languages for offline use

Downloading language data can help when an internet connection is unavailable. Google Play’s Android listing advertises offline translation for 59 languages; this is a store-listing figure that may change, and the offline set is not the same as the full text-translation list. Check the app’s language download options for what is available to you. Google Translate on Google Play

Important limits to keep in mind

  • Different tools have different language support. A language listed for text translation may not be supported in camera translation, voice input, Conversation, Transcribe, or offline use.
  • A pinned language may not pin a pair. The report describes individual languages; it does not establish that a source-and-target combination stays locked.
  • App version does not guarantee access. A feature may be staged, remotely enabled, limited to testing, or changed before a wider release.
  • Pinning is not the same as saving a translation. The reported feature concerns faster language selection; history and saved translations retain translated content.
