1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you want a persistent research library, start by comparing Zotero, Mendeley, Paperpile, EndNote, RefWorks, and JabRef against the way you collect sources and write. If you only need an occasional bibliography, a lightweight generator may be enough. Citationsy is described by Product Hunt as a reference-collection and bibliography-creation tool, but its current pricing, limits, exports, and feature availability could not be confirmed from the available official information. [Product Hunt]
First decide whether you need a generator or a reference manager
A citation generator helps turn source details into formatted citations or a bibliography. A reference manager is a longer-term workspace: it can collect references, organize a library, handle PDFs, and connect citations to a writing app. The categories overlap, but the distinction matters. If you do not need to keep and reuse a source library, a full manager may be more software than you need.

Product Hunt lists Citationsy as a “no-nonsense” tool for reference collection and bibliography creation and records its launch in 2017. That listing does not establish which features, platforms, or plans are currently available. Check Citationsy’s own current terms for limits, export options, privacy terms, and regional pricing before moving an established library or paying for a plan. [Product Hunt]

Which alternative fits your workflow?
For an occasional bibliography
Compare Citationsy with ZoteroBib, which Zotero links as a quick-bibliography tool. Confirm current limits and supported styles in each product before relying on it for a submission. Zotero’s homepage presents the service alongside its broader reference-management tools. [Zotero]
#1 Best Overall
For a free, durable research library
Start with Zotero if you want a broad, cross-platform manager and writing integrations. Consider JabRef if you prefer a free, open-source, text-based approach and your work already uses BibTeX. [Zotero] [JabRef]
For PDF-heavy work in Word
Mendeley’s documented features emphasize importing and annotating PDFs, watched folders, group libraries, and Word citations. EndNote also offers broad reference and document workflows, but the exact features depend on the product version and license. Compare the specific annotation, collaboration, and Word workflows you need rather than assuming either is best for every PDF library. [Mendeley] [EndNote]
Rank #2
For Google Docs or cloud collaboration
Paperpile, Zotero, EndNote, and RefWorks each document Google Docs support or cloud-oriented collaboration features. Their access models differ: Paperpile has browser considerations, Zotero offers optional paid storage, EndNote varies by edition, and RefWorks may be supplied through an institution. Compare how your collaborators will access the same library and document. [Paperpile] [Zotero] [EndNote] [RefWorks]

What do the published prices tell you?
Zotero’s storage page reviewed in 2026 lists 300 MB free, 2 GB for $20 per year, 6 GB for $60 per year, and unlimited storage for $120 per year for individual plans. These are the listed prices on that page at review time, not a guarantee of current pricing. [Zotero Storage]
Rank #3
Paperpile’s reviewed pricing page advertises a 30-day free trial, but eligibility and plan terms can change. EndNote’s reviewed purchase page shows regional offers, so a static price would not reliably describe what a reader will pay. RefWorks lists contact-sales pricing, and the reviewed Mendeley feature page does not state pricing. Check current official plan details, including institution access and storage, before comparing total cost. [Paperpile pricing] [EndNote purchase page] [RefWorks] [Mendeley]

Check these details before switching
- Writing app and citation style: Confirm that the exact tool version supports your word processor and required style; vendor-published style counts do not guarantee every style is suitable for every submission.
- Library portability: Check import and export formats, attachment handling, and whether notes or annotations transfer. Current Citationsy export support is not established by the Product Hunt listing.
- Storage and access: Include attachment storage and any institutional license in the cost comparison, not just the subscription price.
- Collaborator fit: If a project is shared, verify account requirements, group-library behavior, and whether collaborators can use the same writing integration.
- Edition and platform: For EndNote, RefWorks, and Paperpile in particular, verify the exact license, institution route, and browser or platform requirements before migration.
