Yes. Cisco says attackers are actively exploiting CVE-2026-76519, a critical vulnerability in the Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) feature of Cisco Secure Email Gateway. The flaw is rated CVSS 9.8 and can let an unauthenticated attacker write arbitrary files and run commands as root by sending a specially crafted email attachment.
Only gateways with AMP File Reputation enabled for a mail policy and Content Scanner Tools older than 25.3.0.5525 are exposed. Cisco has released fixes, but says there is no workaround that addresses the vulnerability.

What Cisco disclosed on October 14, 2026
Cisco’s security advisory, first published October 14, 2026, identifies CVE-2026-76519 as an arbitrary-file-write vulnerability in the AMP processing used by Cisco Secure Email Gateway. Improper handling of email attachments occurs when the File Reputation service is enabled. A remote attacker does not need an account: a crafted attachment sent through an affected gateway can trigger the flaw.

Successful exploitation can write files to arbitrary locations and execute commands with root privileges on the appliance’s underlying operating system. Cisco’s Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) became aware of active exploitation in October 2026. Cisco’s statement is direct: “Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.”

The affected product can be physical or virtual. Cisco Secure Email and Web Manager and Cisco Secure Web Appliance are listed as not affected by this advisory.
Check whether your gateway is exposed
Both conditions below must be true for a physical or virtual Cisco Secure Email Gateway to be vulnerable:
Rank #2
- Intuitive, browser-based device manager
- IP Security (IPsec) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) VPN for flexible remote access
- Built in, high-speed, selectable dual-band wireless-N access point
- File Reputation is enabled in Cisco AMP and assigned to at least one mail policy.
- Content Scanner Tools is earlier than 25.3.0.5525.
Check File Reputation in the web interface
- Sign in to the gateway’s web interface.
- Open Mail Policies, then choose Incoming Mail Policies or Outgoing Mail Policies.
- Open Advanced Malware Protection for the relevant policy and inspect Enable File Reputation.
- Record every policy where File Reputation is enabled; a single enabled policy is enough to make the appliance’s attachment-processing path relevant.
Check the Content Scanner Tools version
Run this CLI command:
contentscannerstatus
Compare the reported version with 25.3.0.5525. Version 25.3.0.5525 or later includes the fix. Older versions meet the vulnerable-version condition when File Reputation is enabled for a policy.

Fixed releases and the fastest patch path
| AsyncOS branch | First fixed release or required action | What administrators should do |
|---|---|---|
| 15.5 | 15.5.5-014 | Upgrade to 15.5.5-014 or a later fixed release in the branch. |
| 16.0 | Fixed release required; Cisco does not state a specific first-fixed build in the advisory summary. | Migrate to a fixed release rather than remaining on an affected 16.0 build. |
| 16.5 | 16.5.0-780 | Upgrade to 16.5.0-780 or later. Cisco recommends this migration for users on releases earlier than 16.5. |
| Content Scanner Tools | 25.3.0.5525 or later | Install the fixed package when available. This package update does not require an AsyncOS upgrade or a product restart. |
The Content Scanner Tools package is the narrowest technical fix, while an AsyncOS upgrade may be the appropriate lifecycle decision for older branches. Do not treat an upgrade plan as a substitute for checking whether a gateway has already been compromised.

Investigate before and after patching
Cisco’s local check looks for a security-system message in the system_logs file. Run:
grep "System Security" system_logs
On a cluster, run the review on every device. A message indicating suspected compromise requires Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) guidance; do not simply clear logs, reinstall software in place, or return the node to production based on the message alone. A clean result is not proof that no attacker accessed the system. Root-level access can allow an intruder to remove or hide local evidence, so cross-check mail, firewall, authentication, and other external network logs.

| Investigation result | Required response |
|---|---|
| Suspected-compromise message | Preserve evidence and contact Cisco TAC for the recovery procedure appropriate to the appliance type. |
| No matching message | Patch the gateway whenever it meets the two vulnerable conditions; continue monitoring and review external logs. |
| Logs unavailable, incomplete, or inconsistent across a cluster | Assume the evidence is inconclusive, protect the environment, and obtain TAC guidance before deciding that the appliance is clean. |
Recovery depends on deployment type
Virtual appliance suspected of compromise
- Preserve forensic information before changing, powering off, or overwriting the virtual machine.
- Deploy a new virtual appliance using a fixed AsyncOS release.
- Rebuild the configuration manually. Do not import old configuration files into the replacement VM.
- Renew administrator credentials, service credentials, certificates, keys, and other cryptographic materials that may have been exposed.
- Continue monitoring mail flow, authentication, and network activity after the replacement enters service.
Cluster containing a compromised member
A compromised member may expose SSH keys used for communication between cluster members. Cisco therefore recommends restoring every member in a cluster that contains at least one compromised appliance, not just replacing the node that generated the alert. Rotate credentials and cryptographic material as part of that restoration.
The Tool Desk

Escalate a suspected physical-appliance compromise to Cisco TAC. Preserve relevant evidence and avoid an improvised in-place rebuild that could destroy information needed to determine scope or recovery steps.
Cisco Secure Email Cloud
Cloud customers do not need to make infrastructure changes themselves. Cisco says fixed Content Scanner Tools are deployed through its standard upgrade processes and that it has contacted customers when malicious activity was identified. Customers should still follow any Cisco notification, review their own mail and identity logs, and confirm that dependent credentials are rotated if Cisco advises it.
What administrators should do today
- Inventory every physical and virtual Secure Email Gateway and identify its AsyncOS and Content Scanner Tools versions.
- Check File Reputation under both incoming and outgoing mail policies, because either direction can place the gateway in the vulnerable configuration.
- Apply Content Scanner Tools 25.3.0.5525 or later, or move to the appropriate fixed AsyncOS release. For older than 16.5 deployments, plan the recommended migration to 16.5.0-780.
- Run the
system_logssearch on every cluster member and preserve any suspicious evidence. - Review external firewall and network telemetry for activity that local logs may not show.
- If compromise is suspected, isolate the affected appliance as operationally safe, contact TAC, and use the deployment-specific rebuild or restoration process rather than importing its old configuration.
Because Cisco reports active exploitation and provides no effective workaround, delaying the update while leaving File Reputation enabled on an older Content Scanner Tools build leaves the vulnerable processing path in place.
