Cisco ISE CVE-2026-76460: A Critical Authentication Bypass

CVE-2026-76460 is a critical Cisco ISE and ISE-PIC authentication bypass. Find the first fixed patch for each listed release branch and Cisco’s mitigation and incident-triage guidance.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CVE-2026-76460 is a critical authentication-bypass vulnerability in an API endpoint in Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE), caused by insufficient authentication control—not a generic case of privileged APIs being used incorrectly. Cisco says a crafted request could let an unauthenticated remote attacker bypass the web-based management interface and gain unauthorized access. The company rates it CVSS 10.0 and says its Product Security Incident Response Team is aware of active exploitation.

Is my Cisco ISE version affected by CVE-2026-76460?

Cisco says both Cisco ISE and Cisco ISE Passive Identity Connector (ISE-PIC) are affected regardless of device configuration. Compare the installed release branch with Cisco’s first fixed release for that branch:

Installed release branch First fixed release listed by Cisco
3.1 3.1 Patch 12
3.2 3.2 Patch 11
3.3 3.3 Patch 12
3.4 3.4 Patch 7
3.5 3.5 Patch 4

These are the first fixed releases in the branches Cisco lists; confirm your exact installed version and deployment requirements against the Cisco security advisory and its upgrade guidance before scheduling a change. Cisco says release 3.0 has reached end of software maintenance, so administrators on 3.0 should migrate to a supported release that includes the fix.

What is the fixed Cisco ISE patch?

Upgrade to the first fixed patch for your release branch, or to a later supported release confirmed by Cisco’s upgrade guidance. Cisco strongly recommends upgrading; an access-control change is only a temporary risk-reduction measure, not a replacement for the software fix.

Is CVE-2026-76460 being exploited?

Yes. Cisco’s advisory, first published September 16, 2026, says: “The Cisco PSIRT is aware of active exploitation of this vulnerability.” Cisco also warns that successful exploitation may allow threat actors to obtain root-level command execution. That is a possible outcome, not a claim that every successful exploit necessarily results in root command execution.

Is there a workaround?

No workaround addresses the vulnerability. Cisco states: “There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.” As a temporary mitigation while arranging an upgrade, Cisco describes using infrastructure access control lists (iACLs) to permit only required management and control-plane traffic destined for the affected device. Apply this in accordance with your network design and Cisco’s advisory; it does not fix the vulnerable software.

What logs should I check if I suspect compromise?

Use Cisco’s investigation recommendations and preserve relevant evidence where feasible. An attacker with root-level command execution may remove or hide evidence, so a lack of obvious local indicators does not establish that the device was not compromised.

  1. Review access.log on every node. Look for suspicious usernames. In a distributed deployment, check each node rather than only the primary node.
  2. Collect a support bundle. Select debug logs to access additional logs, as Cisco recommends.
  3. Check logs outside ISE. Review external network and firewall logs for suspicious traffic involving the affected device.
  4. If malicious activity is suspected, recover the affected nodes. Cisco strongly recommends re-imaging them and restoring from a configuration backup if needed.

For the latest affected-release details, upgrade guidance, and incident-response recommendations, consult Cisco’s CVE-2026-76460 advisory. Cisco notes that advisories may be updated, so verify the current version before acting.
