Choose the diagram type before choosing the software. A block-level explanation, a wiring plan, and an electrically meaningful schematic are different outputs. For a schematic that may need electrical checks or continue into PCB layout, KiCad is a practical starting point; for general technical diagrams, draw.io is a better fit. The right choice depends on what the diagram must communicate, how it will be checked, and who needs to use it.
Decide what kind of circuit diagram you need
“Circuit diagram” can refer to several kinds of drawings. A diagram that explains a system’s broad function does not necessarily show every electrical connection, and a physical installation drawing serves a different purpose again. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) distinguishes overview, function, circuit, connection, installation, and network-map diagrams. Its preview explains these classes, but it is not the complete standard: IEC 61082-1 preview.

- Overview or function diagram: communicate what a system does or how its major parts relate.
- Circuit diagram: show electrical relationships and connections using symbols.
- Connection or installation diagram: support wiring or physical installation, where connection points and placement matter.
- Network map: show the arrangement of a network rather than a component-level electrical circuit.
Choose the class that matches the reader’s task. If the drawing will guide assembly, troubleshooting, review, simulation, or PCB work, it needs more than a visually convincing picture: its electrical connections and component identities must be clear.

Two useful starting points serve different jobs. KiCad is an electronic design automation tool with schematic capture and a documented schematic-to-PCB workflow; draw.io supports general diagramming and technical illustrations. These are recommendations based on their documented capabilities, not comparative test results.

Before committing, consider whether collaborators need to edit the file, whether the drawing will be handed to a PCB workflow, and whether electrical checking or simulation is expected. Also check the learning materials and documentation version for the software you install. KiCad’s getting-started guide is for version 9.0, while the linked schematic-editor documentation is version 10.0; use documentation that matches your installation. See KiCad 9.0 getting started and KiCad learning resources.
Build the drawing in a deliberate order
- Write down the purpose and audience. Decide whether the page explains function, specifies electrical connectivity, shows physical wiring, or documents a design headed for simulation or PCB layout.
- Choose the tool and output format. Use a general diagramming tool for an illustrative explanation; use schematic capture when symbol identities, electrical connections, ERC, or downstream PCB work matter.
- Place symbols and connect their pins. In an engineering schematic, a symbol is not merely an icon: KiCad symbols contain graphical items, pins, and fields. Pins have electrical properties that help ERC assess connections. Add wires between pins rather than relying on visual proximity.
- Label nets and identify parts. Use clear net labels where they improve readability, and include reference designators and component values where the reader needs them. Keep signal flow and functional groups easy to follow.
- Check the result at the appropriate level. Review the drawing visually. For an electrical schematic, run ERC and investigate flagged issues rather than treating the check as a guarantee. If needed, configure and run a simulation only after suitable models are assigned.
- Review conventions before sharing or manufacturing. Follow project requirements and applicable regional or industry conventions. IEC provides graphical-symbol resources, and its preview points to IEC 61082 for general rules on symbol application and diagram preparation.
Use symbols consistently and check conventions
Symbols communicate component function and connection relationships; inconsistent or ambiguous symbol use can make a diagram difficult to interpret even when the underlying design is sound. IEC 60617:2026 DB is the IEC database listing for graphical symbols used in electrotechnical diagrams. Published on 2026-03-04, it reports more than 1,500 symbols and describes coverage including conductors and connecting devices, passive and semiconductor components, energy production and conversion, protective devices, measuring instruments, telecommunications, and installation plans. The listing describes subscription access: IEC 60617:2026 DB.

For a project that must satisfy a formal requirement, consult the applicable full standard and project rules rather than relying on a preview or a software library alone. IEC’s preview is useful for understanding diagram classes; it is not a replacement for the full standard.
Know what ERC and simulation can—and cannot—tell you
Electrical Rules Check
ERC uses symbol-pin electrical properties to flag certain rule problems in a KiCad schematic. It is a useful review aid, not proof that the circuit is correct, complete, safe, or suitable for its real operating environment. Resolve findings in context: an intentional connection may need an explicit design decision, while an unflagged issue may still be a design mistake.

SPICE simulation
KiCad integrates the open-source ngspice engine in its Schematic Editor. The documented simulation modes include AC sweep, DC transfer, operating point, and transient analysis. Simulation requires appropriate models assigned to symbols. KiCad includes simple models for basic devices, but third-party SPICE libraries are not bundled; additional models may need to be obtained or created. Consult the KiCad simulator documentation for setup details.
A simulation can help examine modeled circuit behavior, but its result depends on the model, setup, and assumptions. It does not establish that a real circuit is safe or will behave correctly under every operating condition.

Make the final diagram usable by someone else
- Use a diagram class that matches the reader’s task instead of trying to make one page serve as an overview, wiring instruction, and engineering schematic at once.
- Keep connections explicit and labels readable; do not rely on crossings or proximity to imply an electrical connection.
- Use consistent symbols and identify components with the references and values needed for review or assembly.
- Run the checks appropriate to the deliverable, then perform a human review for clarity and design intent.
- Share the editable project when downstream editing or engineering handoff matters, and specify the tool/version context when it affects interpretation.
