Both fuses and circuit breakers interrupt excessive current to help protect wiring from overheating and causing a fire. A fuse works once and must be replaced after it blows; a circuit breaker trips open and can be reset after the cause is understood and addressed. Neither device tells you why the circuit stopped, so repeated replacement or resetting is not a safe fix.
How fuses and circuit breakers protect a circuit
Both devices respond when current exceeds a safe level, helping prevent overloaded wiring from overheating. They do this in different ways, but neither diagnoses the underlying problem: an interruption can result from an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance or a short circuit.

Fuse: a one-time interruption
Excessive current heats and melts a fuse’s fusible element, opening the circuit. Once blown, the fuse cannot be reset; it must be replaced with the correct type and rating for that application. A fuse that blows again is a reason to investigate, not to install a higher-rated fuse.

Circuit breaker: a reusable trip
A breaker trips open mechanically when it detects an unsafe condition. After the cause has been addressed, it can be reset. Its handle may rest at OFF or between ON and OFF; on some designs, you must move it fully to OFF before switching it back to ON. Follow the instructions for that breaker.

Fuse vs. breaker: what the difference means in practice
| Question | Fuse | Circuit breaker |
|---|---|---|
| What happens when it interrupts current? | The fusible element melts and opens the circuit. | The mechanism trips open. |
| Can it be used again? | No. Replace a blown fuse with the specified type and rating. | It can be reset after the cause has been resolved. |
| What does an interruption tell you? | Only that current exceeded the device’s limit; it does not identify the cause. | Only that the breaker tripped; it does not identify the cause. |
| Can one replace the other? | Do not assume so. Suitability depends on the application, equipment and local requirements. | |
Some breakers also provide AFCI protection against arc faults or GFCI protection against unwanted current paths to grounded elements. Those functions are additional protections; they are not interchangeable with basic overcurrent protection.
What to do when a fuse blows
For a UK mains plug
Electrical Safety First says a UK plug fuse should comply with BS 1362 and be replaced with another fuse of the same rating. Its examples include 3A for some lower-power items and 13A for some higher-power appliances. These are examples for plug fuses, not service-panel ratings or universal guidance. Check the appliance instructions rather than choosing a rating by guesswork.

- Manual Reset & Reusable: ATM manual resettable fuse equipped with resettable button, when a mini fuse on the fuse box blows, just let it cool down one minute and press button to reset the fuse again; eliminates the hassle of replacing blown fuses
- Meet all your needed size: Manual reset atm fuses includes 5A, 7.5A, 10A, 15A, 20A, 25A, 30A fuse to meet your different need; When a short circuit occurs, it disconnects automatically to prevent excessive current surges and protect the equipment
- Quick Short Circuit Diagnostics: Resettable mini blade fuse allow you to diagnose short circuits or other over-current problems with a fused circuit without having to testing multiple traditional fuses, simple apply power to the circuit and observe if the breaker trips
- High Quality: Resettable blade fuse is made of nickel plated brass terminals, provides superior conductivity and corrosion resistance; and the shell made of 94V-0 flame retardant plastic material for durability and safety
- Wide Application: The height (excluding terminals) of these 5-30A ATM manual reset breaker is 1.49 inch, 0.09 inch width blade; Widely applied for RVs, Caravans, Boats, Anchors, Trolling Motors, Cars, Trucks, etc
For other fuses
Use only the type and rating specified for the appliance or circuit. Do not fit a larger-rated fuse to stop repeat blowing: an oversized fuse on an undersized circuit can create a fire hazard. If the correct replacement blows again, stop using the circuit or appliance and have the cause assessed.
What to do when a breaker trips
- Reduce the load: Unplug or switch off appliances on the affected circuit. Consider whether several devices running together may have overloaded it, or whether one appliance may be faulty.
- Reset it once, following its instructions: If the cause is understood and addressed and there are no warning signs, operate the handle as directed. Some breakers must be moved fully to OFF before returning to ON.
- Stop if it trips again: Do not keep resetting a breaker when the trip recurs, the cause is unclear or the circuit still has a problem. Contact a qualified electrician.
A single trip does not by itself mean the breaker needs replacing. Consumer guidance reviewed here does not establish a routine replacement interval. A suspected defective or unsuitable breaker needs diagnosis, and a compatible replacement depends on the exact panel and circuit.

- 14 VDC ATM automatic reset fuses are suitable for small electrical devices and systems in vehicles, providing overload protection with an automatic reset function. It has a 2.8 mm wide blade, compatible with 280 on-vehicle fuse blocks.
- Single Pole Thermal Type Breaker fuses are widely used in DC power systems (12V to 14V, maximum DC voltage 14V), marine yacht applications, automotive public transportation, RV systems, etc., which are for the protection of their low voltage equipment.Specifically designed for RV leveling jacks & boat windlasses! Tolerates 3-5X inrush current (5s duration) without nuisance tripping, trips only on sustained overload (135% current within 900s) – Zero false alarms!
- 5Amp, 6Amp, 7.5Amp, 10Amp, 15Amp, 20Amp, 25Amp, 30Amp make up a set of commonly used specification fuse blade sets to make your choice easier. Car Protector Blade Fuses Assortment Kit meets different amperage needs and is also recyclable.
- Unlike glass fuses needing replacement, these self-recover after cooling. Ideal for hard-to-access circuits (e.g. anchor winches under deck).
When to call an electrician
Contact a qualified electrician if a fuse keeps blowing, a breaker trips repeatedly, or you cannot identify the cause. Seek prompt professional assessment if you notice burn marks, buzzing or crackling that may indicate arcing, or equipment that feels hot. Do not open or work inside an energized panel.
Panel work is not a generic parts swap: the correct device and any remedial work depend on the installation. Electrical Safety First’s UK technical guidance says remedial protective-device work requires appropriate competence, inspection and testing, and recording. Local rules and equipment instructions govern the work.

- Didn’t need to constantly replace the fuse. when blew a fuse and you decided to invest into a manual reset breaker so you could troubleshoot (and so you can see when it does blow it hence the manual reset instead of auto reset).
How to compare options safely
- Match the application: A plug fuse, appliance fuse and panel protective device are not interchangeable categories. Use the type and rating specified for the equipment or circuit.
- Understand the interruption: A blown fuse or tripped breaker is a warning to investigate a possible overload, faulty appliance or short—not a diagnosis.
- Check for added protection: AFCI and GFCI features address hazards beyond basic overcurrent interruption; they do not make devices freely interchangeable.
- Respect the installation: Replacement depends on the exact equipment and local requirements. Get qualified help for panel work or whenever the cause is uncertain.
