Church Sermon Streaming Services Compared: Hosted Platforms or a Self-Hosted VPS?

Hosted church streaming bundles can include a player, archive and viewer delivery; a VPS offers more control but shifts setup, bandwidth, security and recovery to your team.

For most churches without a dedicated streaming operator, a hosted church streaming platform is the more practical starting point: it can bundle viewer delivery, a website player, archive, and support. A self-hosted VPS can offer more control over ingest and routing, but the church takes on server setup, bandwidth costs, security, monitoring, and recovery. Compare the complete service and workload—not a VPS headline price against a bundled subscription.

This comparison uses provider-published information checked October 3, 2026, plus technical guides with their own publication dates. It is a decision framework, not a universal winner or a church-specific break-even calculation.

What you are comparing

A hosted church streaming service is a packaged offering whose features vary by provider and plan. It may include ingest, viewer delivery, an embeddable player, sermon archive, social simulcasting, captions, or adaptive-bitrate playback. A VPS relay is infrastructure the church configures and operates; an RTMP relay by itself is not a complete congregation-facing service.

Decision point Hosted church platform Self-hosted VPS relay
Setup and operation The provider packages the service; setup and support vary by plan. The church provisions and configures the server and streaming software, then maintains them.
Delivery cost Compare subscription, storage or bandwidth/viewer-hour allowances, and possible overages. Account for server cost and outbound traffic at expected bitrate and concurrent viewership; a church-specific total is not established by the example sources.
Archive and replay Some plans advertise archive or on-demand storage; limits differ. Recording and archive require additional choices; a basic relay does not establish a sermon library.
Viewer playback May include a player, direct page, adaptive bitrate, or OTT options; confirm plan details. The church must arrange a viewer format and delivery path. RTMP ingest alone is not a complete viewer product.
Destinations Some services support embedding and social simulcasting, subject to plan limits. Relaying to destinations is configurable, but the church owns configuration and credential handling.
Support and failure response Check included support and service commitments in the vendor terms. The church team or a separately hired operator diagnoses failures and restores service.
Control Convenient packaged functions, within the provider’s product and terms. More direct control of server configuration and routing, with the corresponding operational responsibility.

How hosted plans differ

Sermon.net

Sermon.net publishes audio and video plans with different usage allowances and overage charges. Its video plans describe website streaming, automatic rebroadcasting to Facebook and YouTube, and live plus on-demand media. Its help page lists equipment and software that can be used, including OBS, vMix, Wirecast, and the ATEM Mini Pro; that list does not mean a hardware switcher is required for every church. See Sermon.net pricing, its usage calculation guide, and live streaming help.

The following are vendor-published prices and allowances checked October 3, 2026; annual-commitment figures are distinct from month-to-month pricing.

Sermon.net plan Month-to-month Annual commitment Published usage allotment
Audio Only $10/month $9/month Not stated in the cited plan figures
Starter $22/month $20/month 25 GB
Growing $42/month $38/month 100 GB
Outreach $77/month $70/month 300 GB
Enterprise $154/month $140/month 750 GB

Sermon.net’s guide distinguishes accumulating storage from bandwidth that resets monthly. It estimates one hour at 1,500 Kbps as 0.64 GB, and one hour at 3,000 Kbps as 1.29 GB. Treat these as the vendor’s examples, not universal measurements; confirm how your selected plan counts usage and overages.

BoxCast

BoxCast lists Standard, Deluxe, Advanced, and 4K streaming plans. Its pricing page describes cloud transcoding for adaptive-bitrate streams, automatic live captions, and other features; OTT apps are listed separately in the comparison. BoxCast states that streaming plans include at least 10,000 viewer-hours per month, a minimum allowance, and describes no viewer-count limit. Confirm the selected plan’s current terms and allowance directly. The page listed Standard from $109/month billed annually and $119/month billed monthly when checked October 3, 2026. See BoxCast pricing. Its partner plan PDF may lag the live pricing page, so use the pricing page for current terms.

Other options and a currentness caveat

Restream’s worship offering describes distribution to a church website and major social channels, with integrations including OBS, vMix, Ecamm, and Zoom. Treat it as a distribution option; the cited page does not establish that every archive or church-specific need is included.

Church Live Streaming’s pricing page lists a hosted church option with a website/Roku listing, recording storage, HLS live and replay playback, OBS-ready keys, and social destinations on its Basic plan; it also lists a distinct continuous-live plan with different capabilities.

SermonCast has two indexed pages with different plan tables: one presents 2026 plans with Live or VOD and a Standard plan with both, while another presents Pro and Premium hosting and a custom live offering. Do not merge them or assume either is definitive without confirming terms with the provider: 2026 plans and the other indexed plans page.

What self-hosting actually involves

The OBS Project’s private-hosting guide outlines a dedicated Debian server, nginx compiled with nginx-rtmp-module, RTMP configuration, and a custom server URL and stream key in OBS. The guide calls itself high-level and points readers to separate installation and module-configuration resources. Its stated Debian version is old, so use the architecture as an illustration, not as current installation instructions. The project describes its scope as receiving an OBS Studio stream and relaying it to connected clients. See the OBS Project private hosting guide.

  1. Specify the service you need. Decide whether the VPS should relay to a social platform, deliver directly to viewers, or both. Choose a viewer playback method and determine whether you need a website player, replay archive, captions, privacy controls, or adaptive bitrate. A basic RTMP endpoint does not supply these automatically.
  2. Choose and configure infrastructure. Provision a dedicated server and install a compatible operating system, nginx, and RTMP module using current documentation. Configure ingest and any output or HLS playback path you intend to use. The church is responsible for updates, access control, and safe handling of stream keys.
  3. Connect the encoder. In OBS, set the service to a custom streaming destination and enter the server URL and stream key required by your configuration. The OBS guide covers the general approach rather than a complete, current, copy-and-paste build.
  4. Plan delivery and operations. Estimate peak concurrent viewers, bitrate, event duration, archive retention, and regional outbound-traffic charges. Assign people to monitor the stream, secure credentials, maintain backups where needed, and recover service if the server or stream fails.
  5. Test the whole path. Verify ingest, viewer playback on the devices and networks your congregation uses, and any intended archive or destination before relying on the setup for a service.

CubePath’s January 11, 2026 tutorial describes nginx RTMP repackaging to HLS without transcoding. Its non-transcoding example uses at least 1 vCPU and 1 GB RAM and estimates that a 3 Mbps stream watched by 50 people needs about 150 Mbps. These are tutorial examples, not production guarantees or a hosting quote. See CubePath’s tutorial. An older OBS forum tutorial, dated March 25, 2014, likewise explains that outbound bandwidth grows with stream size and uploading and downloading connections; its software assumptions and commands are dated, so use it only for that planning relationship: OBS forum guide.

Estimate the real cost before choosing

For hosted plans, compare the recurring subscription with the actual allowances and overages. Storage, bandwidth, and viewer-hours are different units: a plan’s storage allowance does not necessarily tell you how many live viewing hours it supports, and a viewer-hour allowance is not an archive limit.

For a VPS, the key traffic driver is bitrate multiplied by simultaneous viewers and viewing time. A 3 Mbps stream delivered to 50 concurrent viewers is approximately 150 Mbps of aggregate stream traffic at that moment, as illustrated by CubePath; monthly egress depends on how long that concurrency persists and how the host measures and prices transfer. Add the server, any separate storage or delivery services, and the labor required to operate it. No market-wide church streaming price or church-specific VPS break-even point is established by these provider and tutorial figures.

Choose based on your church’s workload

  • Limited technical volunteer time: Start with hosted plans and compare the player, archive, destinations, support, and viewing allowance that are actually included.
  • A capable operator and a clear need for control: Evaluate a VPS if your team can own setup, updates, monitoring, stream-key security, and recovery, and can budget outbound traffic using realistic Sunday peaks.
  • Social distribution is the main need: Consider a multistreaming service, but verify separately whether it covers website playback, archive, and viewer delivery.
  • Before requesting a quote or committing: Write down typical and peak concurrent viewers, weekly stream duration, desired archive retention, resolution and bitrate, required destinations, and who will staff operations.

Do not compare a bare VPS price with a hosted package that also includes viewer delivery, storage, a player, and support as though they provide the same service.

  • Videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream.
