Neither Chromium nor Firefox is a universal winner for automated website screenshots. Capture with the browser engine you need to represent; if your site must work in both, create and review separate screenshots in both. The pixels can differ, and a fair comparison depends on controlling the browser build and capture environment.
Which browser should you use?
Choose Chromium when your screenshot should reflect the Chromium build used in your workflow; choose Firefox when Firefox is the target. If your application needs cross-browser coverage, run both rather than treating one browser’s image as a substitute for the other’s.

Playwright supports screenshot capture through its Page API and supports both Chromium and Firefox. Its Firefox is a Playwright-patched build that tracks recent Firefox Stable, not an unmodified branded Firefox installation. Playwright says the branded Firefox browser is unsupported because its automation depends on those patches. See Playwright’s browser documentation.

A screenshot records a particular browser rendering under particular conditions; it is not a browser-independent picture of a page. Playwright identifies host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors as sources of rendering variation. Its guidance is to run tests in the same environment used to generate the baselines. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation explains these caveats.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Accordingly, Chromium and Firefox outputs should be judged against their intended targets, not assumed to be pixel-identical. Even within one browser family, changes to the browser or environment can affect pixels.
Capture screenshots with Playwright
Install Playwright and the browser builds your workflow needs, then use the Page API to take a screenshot. The following Node.js example captures the same URL in Chromium and Firefox and writes a separate full-page PNG for each browser. The browser projects are independent; failure in one capture does not make the other browser’s image a valid replacement.

import { chromium, firefox } from 'playwright';

const browser = await browserType.launch();

Use the Page API documentation for screenshot options and consult the browser installation and build notes for current setup details. Playwright’s Chromium installation uses a regular build for headed operations and, by default when no channel is specified, a separate headless shell in headless mode. The docs also describe an option for the newer Chromium headless mode.
Make a fair browser comparison
- Fix the environment. Use the same operating system, Playwright and browser versions, headless mode, viewport, device scale, fonts, and page state for repeated captures. Those conditions can affect screenshot rendering.
- Choose representative pages. Include the layouts and content your application actually uses, rather than drawing conclusions from a single simple page.
- Capture each browser independently. Compare Chromium output with the intended Chromium target and Firefox output with the intended Firefox target. Treat cross-browser rendering differences as information, not automatically as a defect.
- Keep baselines deliberate. Pin versions in repeatable workflows and refresh screenshot baselines intentionally when updating Playwright or its browser builds.
- Measure performance locally. Record capture time and resource use on your actual pages and environment if speed matters. The cited official Playwright material does not provide a controlled Chromium-versus-Firefox screenshot speed benchmark.
Use screenshot baselines for repeatability
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() generates a baseline on the first run and compares later runs with it. The visual comparison documentation says it captures repeatedly until two consecutive screenshots match, then saves the last one. That repeated-capture behavior helps avoid relying on a transient first frame, but it does not eliminate the need to keep the environment stable.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Maintain distinct baselines for Chromium and Firefox if both are part of the requirement. When browser versions or capture conditions change, review the resulting baseline changes as an intentional update instead of silently replacing the reference image.
What to track when maintaining captures
- Target fidelity: which browser build the screenshot is meant to represent.
- Coverage: whether the requirement is Chromium, Firefox, or both.
- Reproducibility: whether operating system, build, headless mode, settings, and capture conditions remain fixed.
- Maintenance: whether browser upgrades and baseline refreshes are controlled and reviewed.
- Performance: capture time and resource use for the team’s own pages; no general winner is established by the cited official sources.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return an image or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
