Chrome is built on the Chromium open-source project, and both browsers support the Chrome DevTools Protocol screenshot command. That shared foundation does not guarantee pixel-identical screenshots: browser build, operating system, page state, viewport, device scale factor, capture mode, and screenshot options can all affect a comparison. Official Chrome and Chromium sources do not provide a controlled, version-matched pixel comparison proving that Chrome and Chromium screenshots are always identical—or always different.
Why Chrome and Chromium screenshots can be similar
Chrome for Developers describes Chrome as built on Chromium. Chrome adds features and services such as proprietary media codecs, optional error reporting, Google Account features, automatic updates, and additional release-channel testing. Those product differences do not, by themselves, establish that ordinary webpage screenshots will differ. Chrome for Developers explains the relationship.

Both browsers are supported by the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), which instruments Chromium, Chrome, and other Blink-based browsers. CDP provides a shared Page.captureScreenshot command, so the same automation interface can capture pages in either browser. A shared command and codebase are reasons to expect comparable results under matched conditions, not proof of pixel parity. See the CDP documentation and its screenshot command reference.

A comparison is meaningful only when the capture inputs are controlled. The following are relevant comparison axes supported by the protocol and Chromium’s implementation tests; none implies that every change will alter every page.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Browser build and distribution: Record the exact product and version. Chromium packaging and modifications can vary by distributor; the Chromium project’s comparison page describes Linux specifically, so its packaging details should not be generalized to every platform or build. See Chromium’s Linux-focused comparison.
- Operating system and rendering environment: Platform, fonts, and other environment details can influence rendering. Chromium’s browser tests cover multiple platforms and note platform-specific caveats.
- Viewport and device scale factor: Record the viewport dimensions and device scale factor. Chromium’s tests explicitly exercise scale-factor overrides.
- Headless or headed mode: Keep the browser mode consistent; do not assume a comparison across modes isolates only the browser brand.
- Page state: Use the same URL and ensure the same content, animation state, scroll position, loaded fonts, and other dynamic elements are present before capture.
- Capture source and extent: CDP’s
fromSurfacedefaults totrue;captureBeyondViewportdefaults tofalse. Chromium takes a full-page-size capture path when capture is from the surface, beyond-viewport capture is enabled, and no clip is specified. A clip or different settings may take another path. See Chromium’s Page handler. - Clip and image format: The protocol defaults to PNG and accepts JPEG or WebP. JPEG also accepts a quality value. Keep format, quality, and clip identical; otherwise, an image difference may come from encoding or capture bounds rather than browser rendering. See the protocol reference.
How to compare the two browsers fairly
- Choose one page and state. Use the same URL and arrange for content to be in the same state in both browsers before taking the screenshots.
- Record the environment. Note each browser’s exact product, version, and distribution, along with the operating system, headless or headed mode, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, and color and font environment where known.
- Match the capture options. Use the same CDP screenshot command and explicitly keep format, clip, surface setting, and beyond-viewport setting consistent. Do not compare a viewport capture with a full-page capture.
- Compare decoded images. Check image dimensions first, then use a pixel-diff or image-comparison tool on the decoded images. Preserve the original files so encoding differences can be distinguished from visible rendering differences.
- Repeat before drawing a broad conclusion. A result on one page and environment answers only that specific comparison. It does not establish parity across other builds, systems, or pages.
CDP’s protocol reference documents the capture options, and Chromium’s browser test references exercise cases including clipping, transparency, device scale factor, and beyond-viewport capture. Those sources help define a controlled test; they do not report a Chrome-versus-Chromium parity experiment.
If the screenshots do not match
- Compare dimensions and scale first. Different output dimensions often point to a viewport, device-scale-factor, clip, or full-page-setting mismatch.
- Verify the capture command and encoding. Confirm format, JPEG quality if applicable,
fromSurface, captureBeyondViewport, and clip settings match. - Check build and environment. Confirm exact browser versions and distributions, operating system, and headless or headed mode.
- Check page state. Look for content that changed between captures, including dynamic page elements or unfinished loading.
- Reproduce with matching versions. If the difference persists, document the full environment and command, then compare builds that match the versions you actually use. The official sources do not identify a universal cause for any particular mismatch.
