A Chromecast that makes weird noises and won’t turn on is usually telling you something specific: it’s not getting stable power, it’s failing early during boot, or it’s hitting a protection state (often heat or voltage issues). The good news is most fixes are straightforward and reversible.
This guide walks you through the most reliable checks—starting with power and cables, then HDMI/video handshake, then safe resets. You’ll also get a troubleshooting chart for common symptoms like clicking, buzzing, or repeated startup loops.

What the weird noises usually mean (and why it won’t boot)
“Weird noises” can be fan-like whirs, faint buzzing, clicking, or a stuttering sound that repeats. Chromecast devices don’t normally have moving parts you can hear through the TV, so any audible electrical noise is a warning sign.

- Buzzing or humming: often points to unstable power, a failing/incorrect power adapter, or a bad USB/charging cable.
- Clicking or repeated taps: frequently matches a boot loop where the device keeps restarting but can’t finish initialization.
- High-pitched whine or rattling: can happen when the device is overheating or the adapter is struggling under load.
- Noisy “warm” behavior: if it gets hot quickly, stop testing and treat it as a hardware/power problem.
Even if you can’t hear anything, “won’t turn on” still needs the same root-cause approach: remove power variables, confirm the HDMI handshake, then reset safely.

Before you start: what you need and how to identify your Chromecast
Get everything out in the open before you power-cycle again. That keeps you from bouncing between fixes that are actually masking the real cause.
Gather these items
- Your Chromecast (and original power adapter if you still have it)
- The HDMI cable/adapter (some models are cable-less; some use an HDMI extension)
- A known-good USB power source (ideally a wall outlet with a proper adapter)
- A phone to check your setup status (Google Home app)
- (Optional) A second USB cable or adapter for fast comparison
Identify the model
Look on the device body or in the packaging label. Common types include:
- Chromecast (dongle with a built-in micro-USB/USB port for power depending on generation)
- Chromecast Ultra (often uses Ethernet via a power adapter or dongle)
- Chromecast with Google TV (has a remote, typically uses USB-C power on many variants)
You don’t need perfect identification to fix most “won’t boot” issues, but it helps with the reset process and power requirements.

Start with the fastest “remove variables” steps. These resolve the majority of cases without needing a full reset.
- Unplug Chromecast power from the wall/adapter (not just the TV input).
- Wait 60 seconds for capacitors to discharge.
- Power it from a wall outlet using the official adapter or a known-good replacement.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
- Set TV input manually to the HDMI port you used (use the TV remote, don’t rely on auto-switching).
- Watch for any boot screen or status LED behavior (if visible).
If you still hear noises and it won’t display anything after these steps, go deeper into power stability and overheating.
Power and cable fixes (most common solution)
Chromecast is unusually sensitive to unstable power, especially if it’s powered through a TV USB port. A weak adapter or poor cable can cause boot loops and electrical noise.
Why TV USB power often fails
Many TVs provide “charging” USB power that’s not stable enough for continuous streaming. Even if the Chromecast lights up briefly, it may restart under load—classic boot-loop behavior.

Use the correct adapter output (what to match)
Power requirements vary by model, but the rule is: match the adapter’s voltage and current from the label. If you’re using anything generic, you’re guessing.
- Check the adapter label (for example, values like 5V ⎓ 1A or 5V ⎓ 1.5A are common; exact numbers depend on your model).
- If you’re unsure, switch to the original Chromecast adapter.
- If the Chromecast uses USB-C, don’t force it with a cable that “charges sometimes.” Use a cable you know is reliable at the power level needed.
Test with a known-good power path
- Connect Chromecast power using the wall outlet.
- Swap only one variable at a time: cable first, then adapter.
- Keep the HDMI cable connected to the TV, but don’t stack extensions or hubs.
- If it stops making noise and boots normally, you found the culprit (usually the cable or adapter).
Look for power-port damage
Check the Chromecast’s charging port for bent pins, debris, or looseness. If the plug feels wobbly, power contact can degrade and trigger repeating restarts.
HDMI and TV input checks
Sometimes the Chromecast is powering up, but the TV never completes the handshake. That can look like “not turning on,” especially if the device repeatedly restarts due to power issues.
Try these HDMI changes
- Different HDMI port: use another port on the TV.
- Disable HDMI-related “quirks” temporarily: if your TV has settings like HDMI Deep Color, HDMI Ultra HD, or enhanced modes, turn them off for the test.
- Power cycle the TV after changing ports: unplug TV power for 30 seconds, then plug back in.
Remove HDMI extenders and adapters
If you’re using an HDMI extension, reduce variables by plugging Chromecast directly into the TV port (or use a different extension). Loose adapters can also cause intermittent video output.
Safe reset steps for every Chromecast model
If the device powers but won’t load, a reset can clear a stuck boot configuration. Use only the correct button sequence for your model.
Chromecast (dongle) / Chromecast Ultra
Most of these have a reset button on the device body.
- Keep Chromecast connected to power.
- Press and hold the reset button.
- Wait until the LED changes state (often blinking differently).
- Release the button and wait for the device to restart.
Chromecast with Google TV
These models usually use a button combination or a reset pinhole (depending on generation).

- With power connected, press and hold the Back and Home buttons on the remote for about 5–10 seconds.
- If you can’t access the UI, look for the physical reset method described on the device or packaging.
- Wait for the setup screen to appear.
If you see a reset screen but it disappears immediately, that usually points back to power instability.
If it still makes noises: overheating, power draw, and hardware protection
Audible electrical noise plus “won’t turn on” after power and HDMI tests often means the Chromecast is failing to boot due to insufficient power or internal fault. Overheating is the big one to treat seriously.
Check temperature behavior
- After powering, touch the area around the Chromecast carefully (avoid burning yourself).
- If it becomes hot within 1–2 minutes, stop testing. Continued power can worsen damage.
Ventilation and HDMI layout matter
When Chromecast is plugged into an HDMI port that’s recessed or boxed in, heat can build up. Use a short HDMI extension to give it breathing room if your setup is tight—only after you’ve confirmed power is stable.
Try another outlet (not another power strip)
Power strips and extension cords can reduce voltage or fail under load. Test with a different wall outlet circuit.
Try these workarounds when the main fix fails
If power and HDMI changes don’t resolve it, you still have a few targeted options to narrow the problem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Test Ethernet (Chromecast Ultra / certain models)
If your Chromecast supports Ethernet via a bundled adapter, temporarily switch to Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi. That won’t fix a power fault, but it can prevent repeated Wi‑Fi join attempts during boot that sometimes look like “stuck.”
Try a different TV/monitor
Connect Chromecast to another TV or a computer monitor that accepts HDMI. If it boots elsewhere, your original TV’s HDMI handshake or power behavior may be the problem.

Remove nearby USB devices
If you were powering the Chromecast from a TV’s USB port and there are other devices connected, disconnect them and retest. Shared USB power can sag.
Factory reset alternatives (if you can’t see the screen)
When the Chromecast never shows a setup screen, you can still try reset methods that don’t require video output—mainly the hardware reset button.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReset using the physical button
- Power the Chromecast from a wall outlet.
- Press and hold the reset button.
- Keep holding until the LED indicates reset mode (blink pattern change).
- Release and wait 2–5 minutes.
Then repeat the power and HDMI triage. If it still won’t show anything, it may be stuck in a boot loop caused by power issues.
When to replace parts or stop using it
There’s a point where continuing to test is wasted effort. Use the symptom pattern to decide whether to replace cables/adapter or consider hardware replacement.
Replace these first
- Power adapter: use original or a properly rated replacement.
- USB cable: swap with a known-good short cable.
- HDMI cable/extension: use a certified high-speed HDMI cable if you’re using an extender.
Stop and consider hardware failure if
- The Chromecast makes noise and stays hot quickly even with a correct wall adapter.
- It never reaches any visible LED/boot state across multiple outlets and cables.
- It’s physically damaged (cracks, loose port, burnt smell).
If your Chromecast is under warranty, this is the time to file a claim rather than swapping parts endlessly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Using the TV USB port: convenient, but it’s the #1 cause of “won’t fully boot.”
- Using cheap multi-outlet chargers: they can’t deliver stable power at the right current.
- Leaving it powered while it overheats: repeated heat cycles can permanently damage components.
- Skipping the 60-second discharge: residual power can keep a “half-reset” state alive.
- Changing five variables at once: you’ll never learn what actually fixed it.
Troubleshooting chart (symptom → likely cause → what to try)
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try (in order) |
|---|---|---|
| Buzzing/humming + no video | Power adapter/cable instability | Wall outlet + original adapter → swap cable → swap adapter |
| Clicking/restarting sounds | Boot loop (insufficient power or fault) | Wall outlet → different HDMI port → different cable → let cool 15 min |
| Gets hot quickly | Overcurrent/overheating protection | Stop testing → try correct adapter only → try new outlet → replace if persists |
| No LED/any sign of power | Bad power connection or dead adapter | Unplug 60s → reseat cable → check adapter label → try another outlet |
| Shows boot briefly then dies | Power draw drops under load | Replace cable → replace adapter → remove HDMI extenders |
| Video doesn’t appear, but noise continues | HDMI handshake issue or repeating restart | Different HDMI port → power cycle TV → wall power → reset |
FAQs
Why does my Chromecast make a buzzing sound?
Buzzing usually points to electrical noise from an unstable power path—most often a weak adapter, a damaged USB cable, or powering from the TV’s USB port. Switch to a wall outlet and the correct adapter rated for your model, then test with a known-good cable.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can a bad HDMI cable cause clicking noises?
It can cause “no signal” problems, but it usually won’t cause clicking/restarting power noise. Clicking is more consistent with a boot loop, so prioritize power adapter/cable replacement first.

My Chromecast with Google TV won’t show anything—what should I check first?
Start with wall power using the original adapter, swap the USB-C cable, and try a different HDMI port. If it still clicks or gets hot fast, do a hardware reset using the model’s reset method and then reassess power stability.
Is it safe to keep testing if it’s making noise?
Only briefly. If it becomes hot within 1–2 minutes or the noise persists immediately on power, stop. Continuing to run an overheating or faulting device can worsen damage.
Does a factory reset fix a power-related problem?
No. A reset can clear a stuck configuration, but if power is unstable, the Chromecast may never complete boot. Fix power first (wall outlet + correct adapter + known-good cable), then reset.

What if I don’t have the original Chromecast adapter?
Use a replacement with the exact voltage/current rating from the label of your device or your model’s official spec. If you can’t confirm ratings, borrowing a correct adapter from a friend/device store is better than guessing with a generic USB charger.
Bottom Line
When a Chromecast makes weird noises and won’t turn on, treat it like a power/boot-loop problem first: use wall power, confirm the adapter and cable are correct, and test HDMI handshake with a different port. If it gets hot quickly or keeps restarting even with known-good power, stop testing and move toward hardware replacement or warranty support.
Follow the steps in order and change one variable at a time—you’ll find the fix faster and avoid damaging the device further.
