1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your Chromecast keeps buffering, first check whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi can get online. If they cannot, troubleshoot the router or internet service; if they can, focus on the Chromecast’s Wi-Fi connection, placement, and the network settings around it. Work through the reversible checks below before considering Ethernet or a factory reset.
Why does my Chromecast keep buffering?
Buffering can occur when the Chromecast has a weak or unstable connection, when the router or internet service is having trouble, or when network settings prevent devices from communicating. Google’s troubleshooting pages identify these conditions and recommend checks, but do not report how often a particular cause occurs or quantify how often a fix works.
Start by comparing the Chromecast with another phone, tablet, or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi. If several devices cannot reach the internet, the problem is more likely with the router or service than with the Chromecast alone. Google recommends restarting the router; if internet access still does not return, contact your internet provider to ask about an outage or changed network settings. See Google’s reconnect troubleshooting.
How do I stop Chromecast from buffering?
Check one change at a time and try streaming again. That makes it easier to tell whether the connection improved, without resetting the device or replacing equipment prematurely.

Comes with 2pcs self-adhesive tapes, which is convenient for you to locate this Chromecast with Google TV ethernet adapter in proper location, avoiding poor contact between Chromecast ethernet adapter and LAN Wires due to hanging in the air.
- Confirm the Wi-Fi network. Check that the Chromecast is connected to the intended network and that the phone used to cast is on that same Wi-Fi network. Google’s Wi-Fi setup guidance also notes that some network types can block setup or communication.
- Choose a supported Wi-Fi band. If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, Google recommends trying 5 GHz where the Chromecast supports it. Do not assume every generation supports both: Google says the first-generation Chromecast works with 2.4 GHz only. Check your model before changing bands.
- Update and restart network equipment. Check for a router firmware update, then restart the Chromecast and modem/router using the instructions from their manufacturers. Google’s reconnect guidance gives a two-minute unplug interval for one restart scenario, but its general connection advice points to the router maker’s instructions; there is no single restart interval to apply to every router.
- Improve the Chromecast’s placement. Move it away from the TV and from other devices, wires, or cables that could contribute to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference. Google also suggests moving the router within 20 feet of the streaming device. Treat that as a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed range requirement. Google’s connection troubleshooting instructions say: “To help prevent Wi-Fi or Bluetooth interference, move your streaming device further away from your TV. Also, don’t let it touch other devices, wires, or cables.”
- Consider network load and coverage. If the Chromecast is far from the router or Wi-Fi is unreliable in that part of the home, weak coverage may be the issue. If many devices share the network, consider whether the router can support that load. Google identifies mesh networking as one way to improve coverage; upgrading equipment makes sense only if coverage or capacity is a credible cause.
Could router settings or a guest network be blocking the Chromecast?
If the Chromecast cannot connect or the phone cannot find it, check whether the network isolates connected devices. AP isolation, client isolation, and some guest-network modes can prevent devices on Wi-Fi from communicating with one another. A visible Wi-Fi network does not guarantee that its settings allow Chromecast setup or casting.
Google says captive-portal networks—often used by hotels, schools, dorms, and businesses—are not supported for setup. On a managed network, ask the network administrator before changing isolation or guest-network settings. Google’s connection setup guide describes these restrictions.

Should I use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi?
A wired connection is worth considering if Wi-Fi remains unreliable at the TV and you can run an Ethernet cable to a working router. Google documents an Ethernet adapter for Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast with Google TV, and says Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV support Ethernet despite not having a built-in Ethernet port. Compatibility depends on the exact device and connector, so check the model before buying.
The setup requires a compatible Chromecast, the appropriate adapter, an Ethernet cable connected to a working internet router, and power. Google’s Ethernet adapter quick-start guide says the adapter “provides both power and internet connectivity to your Chromecast device.” Ethernet can avoid a weak Wi-Fi link to the TV, but it is practical only if you can route a cable from the adapter to the router. The guide documents the use case; it does not establish current retail availability.

| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Keep using Wi-Fi | The connection improves after checking the network, band, placement, interference, or congestion. | Model support for the chosen band, signal quality where the TV is located, and whether other devices share the network. |
| Use Ethernet | Wi-Fi remains unreliable at the TV and a cable route to the router is practical. | Chromecast model and adapter compatibility, plus a working router and Ethernet cable. |
| Improve router or mesh coverage | You have identified weak coverage or network capacity as a likely cause. | Where coverage is needed and whether equipment placement or cabling is feasible; Google’s guidance does not rank products or provide current prices. |
When should I factory-reset the Chromecast?
Save a factory reset for after the connection checks. Google includes it later in its troubleshooting sequence, so it is not the first response to intermittent buffering. Follow the reset instructions for your device if the earlier steps do not resolve the problem; a reset is a more disruptive measure than checking Wi-Fi, restarting equipment, or improving placement.
