Chromebook Time Keeps Resetting? Check These Causes First

A Chromebook that loses time after shutdown may have a synchronization or time-zone issue—or an RTC backup-power problem. Start with online sync and check the exact model before buying a battery.

If your Chromebook’s clock resets after shutdown, first reconnect it to the internet and check its time-zone setting. ChromeOS automatically sets the time online. If the clock repeatedly loses time while the Chromebook is off, the RTC backup-power arrangement may be involved—but that does not prove a replaceable coin-cell battery has failed. The design differs by model.

Why a Chromebook clock can reset after shutdown

A Chromebook uses a hardware real-time clock (RTC) to keep time while the rest of the system is off. ChromiumOS documentation describes the RTC as battery-backed, but the backup-power design varies: some devices use a dedicated battery, while others connect the RTC to the main laptop battery. If that power source is depleted, the clock can reset. Some recovery procedures can also reset the RTC on certain designs.

So a clock reset after shutdown can be consistent with loss of RTC backup power, but it does not identify the failed component—or establish that your Chromebook has a separately replaceable battery. The ChromiumOS timekeeping documentation describes behavior through CrOS release R120, rather than documenting every model and historical release.

Rule out internet synchronization and time-zone settings

Google says, “Your Chromebook automatically sets the time when you’re connected to the Internet.” An incorrect display may therefore reflect a lack of online synchronization or an incorrect time zone, rather than an RTC power problem.

  1. Connect the Chromebook to the internet and give it a moment to update the displayed time.
  2. Open Settings and go to System preferences > Date and time. Check the selected time zone. If automatic time-zone selection is available and enabled, the Chromebook can use Wi-Fi or mobile networks to estimate your location.
  3. Restart the Chromebook and note whether the clock stays correct after it is shut down again. A clock that corrects itself online but resets after another shutdown points to a different pattern than a clock that is simply off by a time zone.

See Google’s instructions for setting the date, time, and time zone.

Check battery and connectivity status

If the clock keeps resetting, ChromeOS Diagnostics can help check the Chromebook’s general battery and network condition. It can report battery health and cycle count, measure charge and discharge behavior, and run connectivity tests, including a Google Services connectivity scan.

These results can help you describe the issue to a repair provider, but they do not directly confirm that the RTC has lost backup power. To open Diagnostics, use the Launcher to search for Diagnostics, then run the battery or connectivity tests that match your symptoms. Google explains the available checks in its Diagnostics troubleshooting guide.

Choose the next step based on what happens

What you observe What to do next
The clock corrects itself after connecting to the internet. Check the time zone and confirm that the Chromebook can stay online for synchronization.
The time zone is wrong, but the clock otherwise keeps time. Correct the time-zone setting; automatic location-based selection depends on Wi-Fi or mobile network information.
The clock repeatedly resets after shutdown, even after online synchronization. Ask the Chromebook manufacturer or a qualified repair provider to assess the exact model and its RTC power design before buying a part.
Other hardware or system problems are also present. Follow Google’s general troubleshooting steps, testing after each one. If the issue remains, contact the Chromebook manufacturer.

Google’s general guidance is to contact the manufacturer when troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. A hardware reset is a separate step—not a synonym for recovery—and should be tried only after other ways to fix the problem have failed. Reset procedures vary by model; follow Google’s hardware-reset instructions for the appropriate device.

Why a generic CMOS battery is not a safe assumption

Chromebook RTC backup power is not one-size-fits-all. A model may use the main laptop battery rather than a dedicated RTC battery, and the information here does not identify a compatible part or establish that the battery is user-replaceable. Identify the precise Chromebook model and ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider whether it has a separately serviceable RTC battery before ordering anything.

Do not use recovery as a clock fix

Chromebook recovery reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local files. A clock symptom alone is not a reason to jump straight to recovery; try less invasive checks first. If recovery is eventually necessary for a broader system problem, back up local files beforehand and follow Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions.
