Press Ctrl + Show windows to capture the entire screen on a Chromebook. For just part of the screen, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows, then drag to select the area. The Show windows key is on the top row and opens the window overview.

Press Ctrl + Show windows. The screenshot is captured without opening the selection tool. Capture part of the screen
Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. When the selection tool appears, click and drag over the area to capture. Release to take the screenshot.

Capture a window or choose from the toolbar
Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows to open the Screen Capture toolbar. Choose screenshot, then select full-screen, partial, or window capture. Other ways to take a screenshot
Use an external keyboard
If your keyboard does not have a Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as an alternative. External keyboard labels differ; on some keyboards, Windows or Command can act as the Search key, so the exact combination may depend on the keyboard and layout. Use a Chromebook in tablet mode
Press Power + Volume down to take a screenshot. For more capture options, hold the Power button and choose Screen capture, or open Screen capture from the time menu.

Use a compatible stylus
Open the stylus menu and choose Capture region, then drag over the area you want, or choose Capture screen for the whole display. This requires a touchscreen Chromebook that works with a stylus. Google says Bluetooth styluses cannot be used with Chromebooks. Google’s stylus instructions

After capture, ChromeOS copies the screenshot to the clipboard and saves it in Downloads by default. To choose another destination, open the Screen Capture toolbar, select Settings, then Select folder. Google’s screenshot and screen recording instructions
