If your Chromebook says “Your username or password cannot be verified on this current network,” Google says the cause is a weak Wi-Fi connection—not necessarily an incorrect password. Try fixing the current connection or connecting to another Wi-Fi network, then sign in again.
Start with the exact error message
This guidance applies to the full message “Your username or password cannot be verified on this current network.” Google Chromebook Help explains: “This message means that your Chromebook doesn’t have a strong Wi-Fi connection.” The reference to your username or password can be misleading: for this specific wording, Google points to the network.

Fix the connection, then retry sign-in
- Troubleshoot the current Wi-Fi connection. Improve the connection, then try signing in again. Google’s instructions do not prescribe a particular router setting or claim a guaranteed success rate.
- Try another Wi-Fi network. If one is available, connect the Chromebook to it and retry sign-in. This is Google’s other stated option for this message.
These are alternatives: work on the current connection if that is practical, or test a different network if you can access one. The message alone is not evidence that you should reset your password.
Choose a different fix if the message is different
If the screen says “Forgot your password”
That is a separate account-password issue. Use Google Account Recovery, which asks questions to confirm that you own the account before allowing a password reset. Chromebook Help also advises trying your old password if you recently changed it; that advice applies to this separate password case, not the current-network error.

Google warns against services claiming they can recover your account or password on your behalf. Do not share your password or verification codes with anyone offering such help.
If the account is disabled or sign-in is restricted
If Google says the account may have been deleted or disabled, Chromebook Help says you need another account. If a work or school Chromebook restricts sign-in, contact its administrator. For a permission error on a shared Chromebook, ask the device owner.

If Google asks you to start a Guest session
The message “Before signing in, please start a Guest session to activate the network” describes a different situation. Follow the prompt to start a Guest session, connect to Wi-Fi, and then retry sign-in.

Why a factory reset or ChromeOS recovery is not the first fix
Google identifies the current-network message as a Wi-Fi problem, while Powerwash and ChromeOS recovery are disruptive device-level procedures. They are not the first-line response to this specific error.

- Powerwash: A factory reset removes data stored on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including files in Downloads. Files in Google Drive or on external storage are not deleted by the reset. Back up local files first. Google says users of managed work or school devices cannot reset the device themselves. See Google’s Powerwash instructions.
- ChromeOS recovery: Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local hard-drive data. Google describes it for serious operating-system problems, such as a “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” error, after less invasive steps. See Google’s recovery instructions.
Neither procedure is a substitute for fixing the network connection or resolving a separate account or sign-in permission problem.
