Google also provides a Linux script method for creating recovery media; follow its instructions if you are creating the media on Linux.
If creating or using the recovery USB fails
For an “unexpected error” during recovery, Google’s documented sequence is to erase the storage device and try again, then try another USB flash drive if the error continues. Erasing a USB drive destroys its contents, so first make sure it contains no files you need.

The Chromebook says the drive does not contain ChromeOS
- Confirm that the inserted USB drive is the one used to create the recovery media.
- If it is the correct drive, erase it and create the recovery media again.
- If the Chromebook still rejects it, try another USB flash drive. Google notes that some drives do not work well for recovery.
A different USB drive is relevant only to media creation or recognition problems; it will not fix an extension that will not open or a Chromebook hardware fault.
If recovery mode asks you to remove connected devices
Disconnect peripherals such as a mouse or external hard drive, then try entering recovery mode again. Remove connected devices before starting.

For many Chromebook laptops, Google’s sequence is Esc + Refresh, then press Power. Some models use Esc + Maximize instead. These key combinations are not universal: Chromeboxes and Chromebits use a recovery button, while Chromebook tablets use a button sequence. Use the instructions for your particular device rather than repeatedly trying the laptop keys.
Protect files before recovering ChromeOS
Recovery reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. This is separate from erasing a USB drive: the USB erase affects the selected external drive, while Chromebook recovery removes local files from the Chromebook. Back up files first if you can.
