For everyday ZIP tasks, use the Chromebook Files app first: it can create ZIP files, let you browse a ZIP’s contents, and extract archives. Consider a separate archive manager only when the file format or operation you need does not work in Files and you are willing and able to set up Linux. Can the Files app handle the archive I need, or should I install a separate archive manager? The answer depends on the archive and your Chromebook’s restrictions—not on one app being universally better.
What each option means
The Files app is ChromeOS’s built-in place to browse and manage files, including the documented ZIP workflow. An archive manager is a separate utility for working with compressed files. It is not a second standard ChromeOS file manager: on a Chromebook, one possible route is installing a Linux application such as GNOME File Roller through the Linux development environment.

Google’s published list of Chromebook file types includes .zip and .rar under compressed files, but that listing is not a complete compatibility matrix. It does not establish support for every archive format, encryption method, multipart archive, or device and ChromeOS configuration. Check the specific archive and operation you need rather than assuming either option supports everything.
Use Files for routine ZIP tasks
Google documents three basic ZIP tasks in the Files app: creating an archive, browsing its contents, and extracting ZIP files. Its Chromebook Help page says, “To bundle files or folders together into a single file, you can zip them.” Google’s Files-app instructions describe the steps:

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
- Create a ZIP: In Files, select the files or folders you want to bundle, then choose Zip.
- Browse a ZIP: Double-click the ZIP file to view its contents. This lets you inspect files without first extracting the whole archive.
- Extract ZIP files: Right-click a folder that contains ZIP files and choose Extract all to unpack the group.
These are Google’s documented steps; exact behavior for a particular archive can depend on its contents and the Chromebook. For ordinary ZIP creation, inspection, and extraction, they make Files the simplest starting point.
When a separate archive manager may help
Consider another utility when you have identified a specific archive format or operation that Files does not handle successfully. First note the file extension and what you need to do—such as open, extract, or create an archive—then check the chosen app’s documentation and whether it is available for your Chromebook.

GNOME File Roller is one Linux example. Its upstream project documentation describes support for a range of archive formats, but that claim applies to File Roller itself; it does not guarantee that every dependency, package, format, or operation will work on every Chromebook. Check the File Roller project’s documentation against your actual need before setting it up.

ChromeOS can run Linux applications in its Linux development environment. Google documents connecting Linux files with the Files app and installing Linux tools through the environment, including with APT. Google’s ChromeOS Linux FAQ explains the Linux-and-Files relationship, while its Chromebook Linux setup instructions cover enabling the environment.

This is an optional route for a particular unmet need or for someone comfortable configuring Linux; it is not a prerequisite for the documented ZIP workflow. Linux introduces setup and app-specific variables, so confirm that the environment and the application you need are available on your Chromebook.

Google’s Chromebook file-type information includes the managed-device caveat and directs users to their administrator. That is especially relevant before trying a Linux-based workaround on a work or school device.
