A Chrome-recorded WebM can lack a duration value in its header, depending on how it was recorded and the browser version. Separately, in Daniel Pertu’s interview-practice app, five HTTP HEAD checks confirm that answer files exist before the app deducts a credit. The checks are a precondition in that application’s workflow—not a charge by themselves or a general object-storage billing rule.
Why a MediaRecorder WebM may not show a duration
The MediaRecorder API produces recorded data from a MediaStream. In Chromium’s implementation notes, recordings without duration or seekability are described as a consequence of the WebM live format. The notes identify reconstructing Cues or using chunks with a SourceBuffer as possible approaches. Cues help a player locate points in the media; duration metadata and seekability are related, but not the same thing. Chromium’s Media Stream Recording API implementation notes

Recording mode and Chrome version matter
AddPipe’s May 29, 2026 article, which describes Chrome 148, reports a version-specific distinction: non-chunked recordings have a Duration element beginning with Chrome 140, while chunked recordings and recordings that call requestData() do not. The article says Cues are absent in both cases, regardless of chunking or timeslice. In its account, seeking or determining total length can require downloading and parsing the full recording. These are AddPipe’s reported observations, not a guarantee for every Chrome build, recording configuration, or player. AddPipe: “Duration in WebM Videos Produced by Chrome”
In practice, timeslice controls when buffered encoded data is delivered in chunks; calling requestData() flushes buffered data, as does stopping the recorder. Consequently, “Chrome WebM has no duration” is too broad: the recording method and browser version affect what metadata is present, and a player’s ability to seek is a separate consideration.

How to make a recording useful to downstream tools
First identify what the consumer needs. A database may need only a duration value; a media player may need the file itself to contain usable indexing information; a processing pipeline may benefit from normalized output. Extracting a duration and storing it separately can satisfy an application’s display or database requirement, but it does not modify the WebM or fix seeking in other players.
Client-side handling
Chromium’s implementation notes point to reconstructing Cues in JavaScript or feeding chunks through a SourceBuffer. AddPipe also discusses client-side libraries, but says it has not tested them. Before adopting a library, assess its codec and container support, CPU and memory use, processing time, whether processing blocks the main thread, and behavior with files larger than 2 GB. Choose this route when the browser must produce or process the result locally and those resource trade-offs are acceptable.

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
Server-side remuxing
AddPipe describes using ffmpeg or ffprobe for server-side processing and gives a stream-copy remux example using -c copy -cues_to_front 1. Its article says this path applies to WebM with supported VP8 or VP9 video and warns that H.264 in WebM will not work with that FFmpeg muxer path. Stream copying avoids re-encoding according to the article, but the right command and result depend on the actual file and installed FFmpeg build. Validate the codec, output behavior, and resource requirements in your own pipeline before relying on it. AddPipe’s WebM duration article and remux example

What the five HEAD checks do in Pertu’s application
In Daniel Pertu’s account of his interview-practice application, a session creates five presigned PUT upload URLs—one per answer—and the browser uploads the answer files directly to object storage. When the user submits, the server sends five HTTP HEAD requests to check whether those objects exist. If an answer object is missing, the endpoint returns a 422 response identifying the missing question numbers and does not deduct a credit. Daniel Pertu’s account of the interview app workflow

Here, “five HEAD requests decide whether you get charged” means that successful existence checks are a gate in this particular application’s submission path. The requests do not themselves deduct a credit, and this example establishes neither a universal fee for HEAD requests nor a storage-provider billing rule.

After the existence checks, Pertu describes the server rechecking the user’s balance, atomically claiming the interview by changing it from pending to processing, deducting a credit, persisting the storage key, and queueing a background job. The conditional claim is intended to let only one concurrent submission proceed to deduction.

The described recovery branches are part of that app’s design: if deduction fails, it returns the claim to pending; if queueing fails after deduction, it refunds the credit and marks the interview failed. This is an implementation account, not independent verification of a particular database or payment provider.
Design checks for a similar workflow
- Verify that every expected object exists before treating an upload as complete.
- Make the submission claim atomic so duplicate or concurrent requests cannot both proceed to charge.
- Define what happens when balance validation or credit deduction fails.
- Provide a recovery path if background work cannot be queued after deduction.
The exact error response and rollback behavior should be designed for the application’s storage, database, and credit system; Pertu’s sequence is one example rather than a general rule.
