Firefox has the stronger documented default protection against cross-site tracking; that does not make it categorically more secure. Firefox enables Enhanced Tracking Protection in Standard mode by default and isolates cookies by site. Chrome offers configurable cookie controls and Safe Browsing options, including a more intensive setting that shares additional information with Google for security checks. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize default tracker isolation, threat warnings, or limiting data sent to a browser provider.
Quick comparison: privacy and security defaults
| Area | Chrome | Firefox | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-site tracking | Third-party cookie controls are configurable; Incognito blocks third-party cookies by default. Google Chrome Help | Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) is on by default and includes Total Cookie Protection, which isolates cookies by site. Mozilla Support | Firefox has the clearer documented out-of-the-box anti-tracking advantage. |
| Threat warnings | Safe Browsing offers Standard and Enhanced levels, plus the option to turn it off. Enhanced adds checks and shares more information with Google. Google Chrome Help | Mozilla documents warnings for phishing and malware, alongside other security features. Mozilla Support | More intensive checks involve a privacy trade-off; feature descriptions alone do not establish which browser prevents more attacks. |
| Private browsing | Incognito stops Chrome from retaining specified local data, such as history and cookies, after the session closes. Google Chrome Help | Private Browsing reduces information retained locally from the session. Mozilla Support | Neither mode makes you anonymous to websites or network operators. |
| Compatibility | Some sites may not work as expected when third-party cookies are blocked. Google Chrome Help | Strict ETP can disrupt some logins, forms, payments, comments, and embedded media. Mozilla Support | Start with defaults and use narrow exceptions when a trusted site breaks. |
This is a comparison of vendor-documented features and settings, not an independent audit or controlled head-to-head test. The sources do not establish an overall security winner or a directly comparable outcome statistic.

Which browser blocks more tracking by default?
Firefox: tracking protection is enabled by default
Mozilla says Firefox’s Standard ETP setting is enabled by default. It blocks social-media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies, cryptominers, and fingerprinters. Total Cookie Protection limits each cookie to the site that created it, making it harder for a tracker embedded across multiple sites to use the same cookie to connect your activity.
Firefox also has a Strict ETP mode that blocks all cross-site cookies and tracking content in all windows. It is an optional setting, not the default.

Chrome: choose how to handle third-party cookies
Chrome lets you allow or block third-party cookies and set site exceptions. Its cookie behavior can depend on the profile, settings, version, platform, and other controls, so it is not accurate to say that Chrome universally blocks or allows all third-party cookies. Incognito blocks third-party cookies by default, but that should not be confused with the controls you choose for regular browsing.
If your priority is stronger documented tracker isolation without changing settings, Firefox is the more straightforward choice. If you use Chrome, review its cookie settings and decide whether to block third-party cookies, allowing exceptions only where a site you trust needs them.

How do Chrome and Firefox handle phishing and malware warnings?
Chrome Safe Browsing levels
Chrome offers Standard and Enhanced Safe Browsing, as well as an option to turn Safe Browsing off. Google describes Enhanced as providing warnings about potential new dangers through additional checks. Google’s help pages say this can involve sending URLs and limited page content, extension activity, and system information to Google. Standard uses a more limited data flow, with additional information sent in specified suspicious situations. Read Google’s explanation of how Safe Browsing keeps browsing data private before choosing a level.
Enhanced Safe Browsing may suit someone who values additional checks and is comfortable with the associated data sharing. It is not automatically the best choice for every privacy preference. Chrome also documents automatic updates, Safety Check, sandboxing, site isolation, and phishing protections on its Safe, Secure, Protected Browsing page.

Firefox security features
Mozilla documents phishing and malware warnings, HTTPS-Only mode, DNS-over-HTTPS, fingerprinting protection, and update checks for Firefox. These are useful controls, but the presence of a feature does not show how often it catches a threat or prove that Firefox is safer overall.
For either browser, keep the installed version current. Chrome describes automatic updates; Firefox desktop checks for updates with Mozilla or the installation service, while mobile app updates are handled through the relevant app store. Enterprise management and platform behavior can affect updating, so check the browser you actually use rather than assuming every installation follows the same process.

- Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Does private browsing make you anonymous?
No. Incognito and Firefox Private Browsing mainly reduce what is retained on your device after the session. Chrome says Incognito does not save browsing history, form entries, or cookies after all Incognito windows are closed; Firefox Private Browsing likewise focuses on limiting locally retained session information. Neither mode is a VPN or a general anonymity service: websites and network observers such as an employer, school, internet provider, or network administrator may still be able to see activity.

What are the trade-offs of stricter tracking protection?
Blocking trackers and third-party cookies can interfere with features a site relies on. Mozilla warns that Strict ETP may disrupt logins, forms, payments, comments, or embedded media. Google similarly warns that some sites may not work as expected when third-party cookies are blocked.

Begin with Firefox Standard ETP or your chosen Chrome cookie settings. If a trusted site stops working, use the browser’s site-specific exception or protection control rather than weakening protection everywhere. Keep the exception limited to the site that needs it.
How to choose and configure your browser
- Choose Firefox if you want an explicit, enabled-by-default cross-site tracking defense and site-based cookie isolation.
- Choose Chrome if its ecosystem or workflow suits you and you are willing to review cookie controls and decide how much Safe Browsing information you are comfortable sharing.
- In either browser, install updates, review extensions and site permissions, and use secure site connections. Treat exceptions as site-specific decisions, not a reason to disable protections across the board.
For context, Google VP of Privacy Sandbox Anthony Chavez wrote on December 14, 2023, that “Third-party cookies have been a fundamental part of the web for nearly three decades.” That is Google’s characterization of the web’s history, not an independent assessment of either browser’s privacy.
