If Chrome instead asks you to verify your identity, sign in to your Google Account again. These are separate situations, and Google documents a specific fix for each.
First identify what Chrome is doing
- Chrome asks you to verify it’s you: complete the sign-in prompt for the Google Account connected to the Chrome profile. Google says Sync can pause after you sign out of a Google service such as Gmail. Google Chrome Help: Fix issues with sync in Chrome.
- Sync turns off when Chrome closes, without a verification prompt: check whether Chrome is allowed to save on-device site data. Google Chrome Help: Turn on sync in Chrome.
Allow Chrome to save on-device site data
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security → Site Settings → Additional content settings → On-device site data.
- Turn on Allow sites to save data on your device.
- Close and reopen Chrome, then check whether Sync remains on.
Google gives this setting as the step to try when Sync turns off after Chrome closes. Menu names can vary by Chrome version or language; if a label differs, look in Site Settings for the on-device site data control.

Complete the identity check if Chrome asks
Select the verification or sign-in prompt shown for your Chrome profile and sign in to the Google Account you use with Chrome. Google notes that signing out of a Google service such as Gmail can cause Chrome to pause Sync and ask you to verify your identity (Google Chrome Help).

If Sync still pauses after these steps
The documented guidance establishes these two first steps, but it does not identify one general cause for every persistent case. Device-specific settings or a managed Chrome profile may affect what you can change; the available guidance does not establish that a corrupted profile, antivirus software, or an extension is the cause.

For a more specific diagnosis, note your operating system, Chrome version, whether the profile is managed by work or school, and the exact sign-in or Sync status displayed after restarting. Avoid deleting profile data or resetting Sync as an initial response: neither is part of the documented steps above.
