There is no published head-to-head figure showing that Chrome Memory Saver or closing tabs frees more RAM in every case. Closing a tab removes it from the open tab set; Memory Saver deactivates eligible inactive tabs, which remain in the tab strip and reload when you return. Close tabs you no longer need; use Memory Saver when you want to keep tabs available without keeping their pages active.
How Memory Saver and closing tabs differ
| Action | What happens to the tab | What happens when you return |
|---|---|---|
| Memory Saver | Chrome deactivates eligible inactive pages to reclaim resources, while leaving their tabs in the tab strip. | The page automatically reloads when you access the tab. (Google Chrome Help: Personalize Chrome performance; Chrome Enterprise documentation: Set Chrome policies for users or browsers.) |
| Close a tab | The tab is removed from the open tab set. | You need to reopen the site if you want it again. |
Google describes Memory Saver as deactivating tabs you are not currently using so active tabs can run smoothly; its help page says an inactive tab reloads when accessed. Chrome Enterprise documentation says a discarded page’s resources are fully reclaimed. These descriptions explain the mechanisms, but do not establish a universal RAM advantage for one action over the other.

Which should you use?
Close tabs you no longer need
Closing is the direct choice for tabs you are finished with. Google’s speed guidance says, “The more tabs you have open, the harder Chrome has to work,” and recommends closing unused tabs: Speed up Google Chrome – Computer.

Memory Saver is useful when you want a tab to stay available in the tab strip but do not need its page active. Returning to a deactivated tab reloads it, so its current page state may not be preserved as if it had remained active. Choose among Moderate, Balanced (recommended), and Maximum in Chrome’s Performance settings. Maximum deactivates tabs after a shorter period than the other levels.

Why a background tab may stay active
Memory Saver does not deactivate every tab. Google lists activity that can prevent deactivation, including:
- Audio or video playback, or an active call
- Screen sharing
- Page notifications
- An active download
- A partially filled form
- A pinned tab
- A connected device
Because eligibility depends on what pages are doing, the number of open tabs alone cannot predict how much memory will be reclaimed.

How to manage and check Chrome memory
These Performance settings apply to Chrome on computers; Google says they cannot be personalized on iOS and Android. The help instructions do not specify a Chrome version boundary.
Recommended Free Tools
- Enable Memory Saver: Open Settings → Performance → Memory Saver, then choose Moderate, Balanced, or Maximum.
- Keep a site active: In Settings → Performance, add it to Always keep these sites active if you do not want Chrome to deactivate it.
- Check tab memory use: In Settings → Appearance, enable Show memory usage. The precise location differs slightly on Mac compared with Windows, Linux, and Chromebook.
- Find memory-heavy processes: Open Chrome Task Manager and sort by Memory. Investigate high-use pages or processes before taking action; ending a process can lose unsaved work.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
Google’s published help pages describe Memory Saver’s purpose and recommend closing unused tabs, but they do not publish a controlled head-to-head test or a typical MB/GB figure comparing the two actions. Actual savings depend on the pages open and whether Chrome can deactivate them. Treat the choice as a practical one—remove tabs you no longer need, or let Chrome deactivate eligible tabs you want to retain—not as a guaranteed RAM-per-tab calculation.
