Chrome may ask to find devices on your Mac’s local network because macOS controls whether apps can access that network. Allow the Mac permission only if you use a trusted Chrome feature that needs to connect to a local device or service; otherwise, deny it. A separate prompt may come from Chrome itself and apply to one website, not the Chrome app.
Why Chrome asks to find devices on your local network
On macOS 15 and later, apps must request permission before performing local-network operations. Apple’s Local Network privacy setting controls which apps can “find and communicate with devices on your local network.” Apple describes the aim as putting people in control of which programs can interact with devices on their network (Apple Developer Documentation, TN3179).

Chrome may need that access when a feature you use communicates with a device or service on the same network. The alert means an app is requesting local-network access; it does not, by itself, identify a particular device or explain which operation prompted it.

There are two different permissions
Check who the prompt names. macOS’s permission applies to the Chrome app. Chrome’s separate site permission applies to an individual website making a qualifying request.

Chrome’s site permission covers requests such as those from a public website to a local IP address or loopback destination, and from a local website to loopback. The documented restriction applies to secure contexts. Google says the permission is intended to help protect against cross-site request forgery targeting routers and other devices, and to limit sites’ ability to fingerprint a local network (Chrome for Developers; Chrome documentation).
If the dialog names Chrome as an app, it is consistent with macOS’s control. If it names a website, it is consistent with Chrome’s site-level permission. Without the exact dialog and your installed versions, it is not possible to identify which operation triggered your specific prompt.

Should you allow Chrome local-network access?
- Allow it if you recognize and trust the feature you are using and it needs to connect to a device or service on your local network.
- Deny it if you do not use a feature that needs local-network access, do not recognize the website asking, or cannot tell why it needs access. You can change the Mac app permission later in System Settings.
- Do not assume the prompt identifies a target. It signals a local-network operation or qualifying website request, but does not tell you which particular device or site is involved in every case.
How to change either permission
Change Chrome’s Mac app permission
- Open the Apple menu and select System Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security > Local Network.
- Switch Chrome on to allow access, or off to deny it.
Change a website’s Chrome permission
- Open the website whose access you want to adjust.
- Select View site information beside the address bar.
- Choose Site settings and change the Local network access permission. Chrome says site-setting changes save automatically (Chrome Help).
