A Chrome Headless screenshot that works locally but fails in GitHub Actions does not point to one universal fix. First identify whether the browser fails to launch, the page fails to load, the screenshot times out, or it completes with different pixels. Then compare the CI browser installation, Linux dependencies, sandbox setup, and execution environment with your local one.
Classify the failure before changing the workflow
Record the framework, versions, runner image, failing command, and complete error output. Keep the failure category clear; launch fixes will not solve a navigation or rendering problem.

- Launch failure: Chrome or Chromium never starts; logs may say “Failed to launch browser” or “No usable sandbox.”
- Missing executable or library: CI cannot find the expected browser binary, or the browser exits because a shared library is unavailable.
- Navigation failure: The browser starts, but the target page does not load successfully.
- Screenshot timeout: Navigation may work, but the screenshot operation stalls or exceeds its timeout.
- Rendering mismatch: The screenshot is produced, but its appearance differs from the local result.
Save the exact error, framework and browser versions, GitHub Actions runner OS/image, and the command that fails. Reports of failures on particular Linux runners or with a specific extension are examples, not proof of the cause in another workflow.

Check browser installation and version compatibility
Puppeteer
Puppeteer normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing as part of installation. If package-manager policy blocks install scripts, that browser download may be skipped. Check the CI install output and package-manager configuration, then compare the browser Puppeteer expects with the binary actually present. Browser installation behavior can change. The current Puppeteer guide describes downloading a recent Chrome for Testing and, from Puppeteer v21.6.0 onward, a chrome-headless-shell binary. Do not assume an older local browser or a system Chrome is interchangeable with the binary expected by the installed Puppeteer version.
Playwright
Use Playwright’s documented GitHub Actions setup rather than guessing at browser paths. Its workflow installs browser binaries and operating-system dependencies with npx playwright install --with-deps. Follow the current instructions for your Playwright version: Playwright on GitHub Actions.

For Linux launch failures, check native dependencies
A browser binary can exist and still fail to start if the runner lacks shared libraries. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance suggests running ldd against the Chrome executable to identify missing dependencies and lists common Linux packages: Puppeteer troubleshooting.

- Find the exact Chrome executable used by the automation framework in CI.
- Run
ldd /path/to/chromein the same runner or container environment. - Inspect the output for missing libraries, then install the required operating-system packages using the runner’s package manager or the framework’s documented dependency-install command.
- Rerun the same screenshot command and confirm whether the original launch error has changed.
Do not infer Linux dependency requirements from a successful local run on a different operating system. Match the diagnosis to the runner image and framework version.

Treat “No usable sandbox” as a sandbox problem
If the error explicitly says “No usable sandbox,” investigate the runner or container’s sandbox configuration. It is not the same as a missing browser binary or missing shared library. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting documentation says: “Running without a sandbox is strongly discouraged. Consider configuring a sandbox instead.” Avoid making --no-sandbox a routine fix; disabling browser isolation changes the security posture and may conceal the actual environment problem.
A Puppeteer issue describes this error in one GitHub Actions context after a runner transition from Ubuntu 22.04 to Ubuntu 24.04. That report is a useful example of an environment-specific failure, not evidence that every Ubuntu runner needs the same workaround: Puppeteer issue #13841.

Debug Playwright browser launch in CI
For Playwright launch failures, enable its browser debug logs in the workflow step that reproduces the failure:
DEBUG=pw:browser npx playwright testUse the actual command your project runs if it differs from npx playwright test. The output helps distinguish a browser process that never launches from failures later in navigation or screenshot capture. Combine the logs with Playwright’s CI installation instructions rather than changing unrelated flags: Playwright CI documentation.

Investigate timeouts and visual differences separately
If the screenshot times out
Confirm whether browser startup and page navigation completed before the timeout. Then make one controlled change at a time and retain the full logs. A Playwright issue reports a screenshot timeout associated with an extension in a specific Linux/Playwright setup; it does not establish that extensions are the cause of other timeouts: Playwright issue #34166.
If the image differs from local output
Compare the environments that affect rendering: operating system, browser and framework versions, fonts, viewport, device scale factor, and any page state or timing assumptions in the test. Local success alone does not establish that CI has the same fonts, browser, native libraries, sandbox support, or execution conditions.
Playwright documents container execution as a way to make screenshot and visual-regression testing more consistent across operating systems. Its CI documentation includes a container example using mcr.microsoft.com/playwright:v1.63.0-noble; match any container tag you adopt to the Playwright version installed in your project, and verify the current documentation because example tags can change.
Change one variable, then verify the result
- Capture the baseline error and environment details.
- Make only the change indicated by the symptom: install the expected browser, install missing OS dependencies, address the reported sandbox configuration, or align rendering environments.
- Run the same command again on the same runner image.
- Check whether the failure category changed. If it did, diagnose the new symptom rather than keeping unrelated workarounds.
- Remove experimental launch flags that were not needed to resolve the verified cause.
