There is no universal Chrome flag that makes every Headless screenshot’s text sharp. First identify whether the problem is incorrect image scaling, a fallback or late-loading font, or platform-specific text rasterization. Then compare captures with the viewport, device scale factor, font, operating system, and Chrome implementation held constant.
Identify what “blurry” means in your screenshot
Different symptoms point to different causes. Before changing launch flags or CSS, compare the screenshot with the page as rendered in a browser and ask what changed:

- Soft glyph edges: could involve image scaling or platform-specific rasterization.
- Pale or washed-out text: may be a contrast or rasterization difference, particularly in the documented Windows case below.
- Text that appears too large or too small: check the CSS viewport, screenshot pixel dimensions, and device scale factor.
- Different letter shapes or spacing: check which font actually rendered and whether the intended web font had loaded.
This is a diagnostic framing, not a Chrome rule that maps each appearance to exactly one cause. One screenshot can have more than one problem.

Start with a fixed viewport and a device scale factor of 1. This gives you a baseline before introducing display scaling or resizing the PNG. Chrome Headless uses a configurable virtual screen independent of physical displays; Chrome’s screen-configuration documentation says stable screen configuration functionality starts with Chrome 142.

Set a fixed command-line viewport
Use Chrome’s --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT option so runs are comparable. For example, Chrome’s command-line screenshot documentation shows:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/
Check the resulting PNG’s pixel dimensions against the dimensions you expect. Do not resize it until you have checked the browser-side geometry: resampling can soften text and obscure whether the original capture was correct.
Check device scale factor separately
A device scale factor changes how CSS pixels map to screenshot pixels and can affect window.devicePixelRatio and media queries. Compare a baseline at scale factor 1 with a separate capture at your intended factor. Keep the viewport and page the same, and inspect both the PNG dimensions and the page’s window.devicePixelRatio.

Chrome’s virtual screen configuration is distinct from the physical monitor attached to the machine. If you use current Headless screen emulation, inspect or configure its scale factor rather than assuming the host display determines the screenshot’s pixel ratio. A ChromeDriver issue on Mac documents scale-factor effects, but it was marked “Won’t fix (Intended behavior)”; treat it as a behavior clue for that report, not proof of a universal font-quality fix.
Verify the font Chrome actually rendered
A CSS font-family declaration is a prioritized font stack, not proof that the first listed typeface rendered. In Chrome DevTools, inspect the selected element’s rendered font. Confirm whether Chrome used the expected web font or a fallback, and check that the font request succeeded and that the intended face and weight are active.
Wait for the font, not just for navigation
A capture can happen before a web font is ready. Chrome’s Headless documentation includes a Puppeteer navigation example using waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but network idle alone does not guarantee that a particular page’s font face is loaded and applied. Use an application-level readiness condition where possible, then verify the rendered font in the captured state.

Chrome’s command-line screenshot option --timeout limits how long Chrome waits before taking the screenshot. The documented example --timeout=5000 illustrates a 5,000 ms maximum wait; it is not a recommended universal delay. If a capture is early, the page may be incomplete, including its typography. A longer timeout may help only if the page needs more time; it does not prove the font loaded.

Understand CSS font-display behavior
Chrome Lighthouse documents font-display: swap, optional, and fallback as modes that can allow system-font text to appear while a custom font is unavailable. That can make text visible sooner, but the fallback and final font may have different shapes and metrics. If the screenshot catches the transition, compare the rendered typeface and capture timing before changing the CSS policy.
Compare operating systems and Chrome implementations
If the viewport, scale, and rendered font are correct, compare captures on the target operating system using the same page, Chrome version, scale factor, and capture method. Text rasterization and perceived contrast can differ across operating systems and browser versions.

Windows washed-out text is a scoped case
Chrome’s explanation of Windows text rendering says Chromium uses Skia for final text rasterization and describes feedback about washed-out text in relation to contrast and gamma settings. The revised contrast value of 1.0 became the default in Windows Chrome builds starting with Chrome 132. This is a Windows- and version-specific change, not a general Linux or macOS switch to copy into launch options.
Distinguish current Headless from Headless Shell
Chrome documents both current Headless mode and the older Headless Shell (chrome-headless-shell). Check which implementation your automation actually launches: a comparison between different implementations is not a controlled test of font rendering.
For a reproducible platform-specific report, record the operating system, Chrome build, Headless implementation, capture library, screenshot dimensions, device pixel ratio, and rendered font. Report it to the relevant Chromium or Puppeteer issue tracker only after these variables are controlled.

A controlled troubleshooting sequence
- Save an untouched baseline. Keep the original PNG and note the page URL, capture command or library, and time of capture.
- Fix the viewport. Set
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHTfor command-line capture, or the equivalent fixed viewport in your automation. - Start at scale factor 1. Record the PNG’s pixel dimensions and
window.devicePixelRatio; then test the intended scale factor in a separate run. - Inspect the actual font. Use DevTools’ rendered-font information and confirm the expected font resource, face, and weight are active.
- Wait on a meaningful readiness condition. Do not infer that a font is ready from network idle alone. If the page has an application-level ready signal, wait for it.
- Hold software and platform steady. Repeat with the same Chrome version and Headless implementation on the same operating system before comparing another platform.
- Change one variable at a time. Compare the original PNGs before any post-processing so each result has a clear cause.
Common fixes that are not general fixes
--disable-gpu: do not use it as a general font-sharpness setting. Chrome’s Headless FAQ describes it as a historical temporary workaround for certain Windows issues and says other platforms no longer require it.- Forcing GPU rasterization: the cited Chrome guidance does not establish this as a general fix for blurry text.
- Adding text shadows or changing font weight: these change the page’s design but do not establish whether the capture has a scale, font-loading, or rasterization problem.
- Resizing the PNG: resizing before checking browser geometry may itself soften the text and conceal the original issue.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot through an API rather than debugging a local Chrome installation, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API and an MCP server. It is not a magic switch for changing how your own Chrome installation rasterizes text; compare its output with your local capture if the distinction matters.
For a basic WebP capture, replace the example URL with the page you want to capture and provide your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
