Use PNG when you need a screenshot image; use PDF when you need a document containing the rendered web page. Chrome Headless has separate flags for each output. Neither is universally better: choose according to how the result will be viewed or used.
PNG or PDF: choose by the file you need

Capture a page as PNG or PDF with Chrome Headless
Run Chrome Headless with the URL and the output flag that matches the deliverable. The commands below use chrome as the executable name; use the Chrome executable available on your system if it differs.
Save a PNG screenshot
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 https://example.comChrome saves the screenshot as screenshot.png in the current working directory. The window size sets the capture viewport, so choose dimensions deliberately for the page and intended use.

Save a PDF
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf https://example.comChrome saves the page as output.pdf. To leave out the print header, including the date and time, and footer, including the URL and page number, add --no-pdf-header-footer:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.comOlder Chrome versions may use the earlier flag --print-to-pdf-no-header. If the newer flag is not recognized, check the documentation for the Chrome version you are running.

Allow time for pages that load or update
Some pages are still loading or changing when capture begins. Chrome’s --timeout sets the maximum wait before screenshot or PDF capture, even if the page has not finished loading. For time-dependent content, --virtual-time-budget can advance virtual time before capture.
chrome --headless --timeout=10000 --screenshot --window-size=1440,900 https://example.comUse a wait appropriate to the page rather than assuming that a longer delay guarantees all content will appear. The documented flags control timing; they do not establish that every dynamic page will render completely.

Common capture issues
- The screenshot has the wrong dimensions: set the viewport explicitly with
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHTand rerun the capture. - PDF headers or footers appear: add
--no-pdf-header-footer; on older Chrome versions, check whether--print-to-pdf-no-headeris required. - Page content is missing or stale: the page may not have finished loading or updating. Adjust
--timeout; for time-dependent content, consider--virtual-time-budget. - The output is not the format you need: use
--screenshotfor a PNG image or--print-to-pdffor a PDF document.
