1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID means Chrome could not validate the site’s TLS certificate to a trusted certificate authority. It is a certificate-trust problem, not a screenshot-rendering problem. First compare the same URL in regular Chrome, then check for an incomplete or untrusted certificate chain, an HTTPS-inspecting proxy, or a missing approved private CA. Repair trust through the site owner or your organization’s authorized process; accept invalid certificates only when an isolated test intentionally needs that exception.
What the error means—and what it does not
Chrome uses certificate authorities (CAs) as trust anchors when validating a website’s HTTPS certificate. The error means validation failed; by itself, it does not say whether the problem is the site’s certificate chain, the machine’s trust configuration, or an intermediary such as a proxy. Chromium’s Chrome Root Store FAQ explains Chrome’s trust model.

Headless capture options do not fix TLS validation. Chrome’s --screenshot flag captures a page, while --window-size sets the viewport. Neither establishes trust in a certificate. A longer capture timeout can allow a page more time to load, but it cannot repair a certificate error.
Diagnose the failure before changing trust
1. Record the environment
Before changing certificates or automation settings, record the target URL, Chrome version and executable, operating system or container image, automation framework, launch arguments, proxy or VPN settings, and the full browser or network error. Trust stores and automation controls vary across these environments, so there is no safe universal OS command for this error.

2. Compare headless and regular Chrome
Open the same URL in ordinary Chrome in the same environment. If both modes fail, investigate the certificate chain, machine or container trust configuration, system clock, and network path. If only the automated run fails, compare its executable, runtime environment, proxy settings, and launch configuration with the working browser. This comparison narrows the search; it does not identify a root cause on its own.
3. Check for HTTPS inspection
On a work network, VPN, or managed device, ask the administrator whether a proxy intercepts HTTPS and which CA certificate is approved for that environment. Chrome Help identifies a missing or uninstalled proxy certificate as one possible cause of certificate errors. See Google Chrome Help: Get help with common error messages in Chrome.
Fix certificate trust without weakening it
If you control the website
Have the site operator check that the server presents a valid certificate and the required certificate chain. Correcting the server configuration is preferable to teaching every client to trust an exception.

If a legitimate private CA is required
Obtain the CA certificate from the responsible administrator through an approved channel. Verify its authenticity, then follow the organization’s or operating system’s instructions for installing it in the appropriate trust store. Do not download a root certificate from an arbitrary website or install one merely to make a screenshot succeed. A trusted root can authorize certificates within its trust scope. Chromium warns: “You should never install a root certificate without carefully considering the impact this might have on your privacy and security.” Read the Chrome Root Store FAQ; Chrome Help likewise cautions that installing a certificate yourself is usually a security risk.
Allow an invalid certificate only for an intentional test
If the test is specifically meant to visit a known endpoint with an invalid certificate, WebDriver can be configured to accept insecure certificates for that browser session. Selenium documents the acceptInsecureCerts capability; when it is false, the default, the browser returns a certificate error. This is a scoped bypass, not a repair to the server’s certificate chain or the machine’s trust configuration.
Use that capability only in an isolated test where skipping certificate validation is an explicit part of the test design. Do not use it for routine production browsing or describe a successful screenshot under this setting as proof that HTTPS is trustworthy. See Selenium: Browser Options.

Run a Chrome Headless screenshot after trust is resolved
Chrome’s documented command-line pattern is:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com/
Replace chrome with the Chrome executable available in your environment and https://example.com/ with the target URL. Chrome writes screenshot.png to the current working directory. The viewport flag sets the capture dimensions; it does not change certificate validation. Chrome’s CLI reference also documents --timeout for screenshot capture, but increasing it will not fix an untrusted certificate. See Chrome Headless command-line reference.

Check which Headless implementation your job launches
Current Chrome Headless is unified with regular Chrome; Chrome for Developers says, “Chrome now has unified Headless and headful modes.” The updated mode shipped in Chrome 112. Starting with Chrome 132, the earlier Headless implementation is available only as the separate chrome-headless-shell binary.
When behavior appears specific to Headless, identify whether the job launches Chrome with --headless, Puppeteer with headless: 'shell', or the standalone shell executable. That distinction helps compare like with like, but none of those choices inherently repairs certificate trust. See Chrome Headless mode.

Troubleshoot common cases
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Chrome and Headless both show the error | Site certificate chain, machine or container trust, system clock, and network interception. | Ask the site operator to correct the chain, or confirm an approved private CA with the administrator. |
| Only a work network or VPN fails | Whether HTTPS inspection is enabled and which proxy CA the organization authorizes. | Ask the administrator for the approved certificate and installation process; do not trust an unverified root. |
| Only automation fails | Chrome executable and version, runtime or container image, proxy configuration, and launch arguments. | Compare them with the working regular-browser environment before changing trust settings. |
| A longer timeout changes nothing | Whether Chrome is reporting a certificate-validation error rather than a slow page load. | Resolve trust first; a capture timeout does not validate certificates. |
| The screenshot succeeds with insecure certificates enabled | Whether the test intentionally targets an invalid-certificate endpoint. | Keep the bypass scoped to that test session; restore normal validation for other traffic. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For a normal screenshot request, one GET call returns an image or PDF; it is an alternative when you want a capture service rather than managing a browser locally. It does not make an invalid certificate trustworthy.
Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/ -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
