Google reported that Chrome’s Speedometer 2.1 scores had more than doubled on many Android devices since Chrome M112. This was a Google engineering post, not an independent comparison, and the claim does not apply to every Android phone or to every Speedometer version.
Google attributed the gains to faster Chrome builds for premium devices, accumulated V8 and Blink engine work, and collaboration on Android scheduling and hardware. Speedometer indicates responsiveness on a synthetic set of web-app interactions; it is not a measure of every part of browsing.
What Google’s claim means
In a December 4, 2024 Chromium Blog post, Chrome software engineer Eric Seckler wrote that “Since Chrome M112, Speedometer 2.1 scores have more than doubled on many Android devices.” Google used Speedometer 2.1 for this longer-term comparison because Speedometer 3 launched during Chrome M122. Scores from different benchmark versions should not be treated as directly interchangeable without method details.
The claim is about benchmark scores on many devices, not a promise that every Android phone, website, or user interaction became twice as fast. Google also reported that build optimizations accounted for more than half of the overall Speedometer score improvements in its comparison.

What changed in Chrome and Android
| Contributor | What Google described |
|---|---|
| Chrome builds for premium devices | Starting with M113, Chrome could ship a separate higher-performance build to premium Android devices through Google Play. Google described targeting 64-bit Arm, compiling C++ for speed rather than binary size, adjusting compiler inlining, using profile-guided optimization, and changing code ordering. |
| Browser engines | Google cited accumulated improvements to V8, Chrome’s JavaScript engine, and Blink, its rendering engine. |
| Android scheduling and hardware | Google described work with Android partners on thread scheduling and hardware performance. It separately reported a 60–80% Speedometer 3.0 improvement for Snapdragon 8 Elite versus its predecessor; this is not the Speedometer 2.1 comparison across many Android devices. |
These explanations and figures come from Google’s account of its engineering work. They should be presented as Google’s reported findings, not as an independent device-by-device test.
What Speedometer measures
Speedometer measures browser responsiveness by timing simulated interactions with web applications. Google’s Speedometer 3 explainer describes workloads including todo apps, a mock news site, charting applications, and code or text editors. The benchmark offers a repeatable way to compare particular workloads, but Google notes that it cannot perfectly represent the whole web.

A higher score is evidence of improvement on the benchmark’s workload, not proof that video playback, network speed, every website, or every real-world interaction improved by the same amount. Comparisons need to identify the Speedometer version, device and processor, Chrome build, and Android configuration.
A Google Docs example—and its limits
Google reported that Chrome M112 took more than 50% longer than M129 to load a Google Docs document on a Pixel Tablet. This is a Google-provided comparison measured on that device. It should not be generalized to all Android devices, websites, or user interactions.

How to interpret later Android performance figures
Google’s March 25, 2026 Android performance post reports other results with different dates, measures, and populations. It reports a -0.8 correlation between Speedometer scores and 99th-percentile interaction latency (INP); 20–60% year-over-year gains in Speedometer and LoadLine scores on some flagship Android phones versus their predecessors; and field results of 4–6% faster page loads and 6–9% faster high-percentile interactions on newer models. These later figures are not the 2024 M112-to-later-Chrome Speedometer 2.1 comparison.
How to compare benchmark results fairly
- Confirm the exact Speedometer version. Do not compare 2.1 and 3.x scores as though they were the same test.
- Record the device, processor, Chrome build, and Android configuration for each result.
- Check that the runs use the same benchmark setup and comparable conditions.
- Keep synthetic benchmark scores separate from field measures such as page loads and interaction latency.
- When citing a reported result, name its source and preserve its scope: Google’s 2024 claim concerns many Android devices, while its Pixel Tablet example concerns one device.
FAQ
Did Chrome for Android really double its Speedometer score?
Google said Speedometer 2.1 scores had more than doubled on many Android devices since Chrome M112. It was a Google-authored engineering report, not an independent test, and it does not claim that every device doubled its score.

Does a doubled score mean my phone is twice as fast?
No. It means the reported browser build scored higher on the benchmark’s simulated web-app interactions. It does not mean every site or browsing task will be twice as fast.
Why is Chrome faster on Android, according to Google?
Google pointed to premium-device Chrome build optimizations, V8 and Blink improvements, and collaboration with Android partners on scheduling and hardware. The post attributed more than half of the overall Speedometer score improvements to build optimizations.
Can I compare Speedometer 2.1 and Speedometer 3 scores?
Not as though they were the same test. Google used Speedometer 2.1 for its longer view because Speedometer 3 launched during Chrome M122. Identify the benchmark version and method when comparing results.
Does Speedometer represent real-world browsing?
It measures responsiveness on simulated web-app workloads and can be useful for comparisons, but it cannot perfectly represent the whole web. Google’s reported benchmark scores should also be distinguished from its separate field measurements of page loads and interactions.
