Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor republishing an article that is already live on a website, start with Medium’s built-in Import a story tool. Medium says it creates an editable draft, backdates it to the original publication date, and automatically adds a canonical URL pointing to the source. Use a Chrome extension only when it solves a specific transfer or formatting problem—and check its permissions and the draft it creates before publishing.
How the two approaches differ
| What matters | Medium’s Import a story tool | A Chrome extension |
|---|---|---|
| Typical starting point | An already-published article’s URL. Medium imports it as a draft for you to review and publish. Medium Help Center | Varies by extension. The Poneglyph Chrome Web Store listing says it transfers an article open in Chrome into a Medium draft. Poneglyph listing |
| Canonical URL | Medium says the importer automatically sets a canonical URL that references the original source. Medium Help Center | Not established for Poneglyph. Do not assume an extension set the canonical correctly; inspect the story settings or published page source. Medium Help Center |
| Original publication date | Medium says the imported story is backdated to its original date. Medium Help Center | Not established for Poneglyph. |
| Formatting and media | Medium’s importer interprets the source page to the best of its ability; some pages may import incorrectly, blank, or with missing content. Medium Help Center | The Poneglyph listing claims it preserves elements such as code blocks, images, headings, lists, and captions. These are the developer’s claims, not independently verified results. Poneglyph listing |
| Final publishing control | You can inspect and edit the imported draft before choosing to publish it. Medium Help Center | The Poneglyph listing says it does not click Medium’s final Publish button; this is a developer claim, not independently verified. Poneglyph listing |
| Permissions and privacy | Part of Medium’s publishing workflow. | Permissions and site access depend on the individual extension. Google recommends reviewing requested permissions and installing only extensions you trust. Google Chrome Help |
When to use Medium’s importer
Choose the native tool for a typical article URL when you have the right to republish the material. It is the clearest documented workflow when you want an editable draft with the original date and a canonical link handled automatically. Medium’s guidance permits importing your own blog content when you hold the rights, and says you may import material from other sites only when you have permission or other rights to republish it. - In Medium, open Stories and select Import a story.
- Paste the URL of the article that is already published, then start the import.
- Review the resulting draft. Check text, headings, links, images, captions, and embeds; edit anything that did not transfer as intended.
- Confirm the canonical destination is the original article before publishing. Medium says its importer sets this automatically, but you can verify the setting if the destination matters to your publication.
- Publish only after the draft is ready and you have confirmed your republishing rights.
When an extension may be useful
An extension is worth considering when a specific limitation of the native import workflow matters to your article—for example, transferring technical formatting from a page already open in Chrome. Poneglyph’s listing describes transferring an article into a Medium draft and claims to preserve code blocks, images, headings, lists, and captions. Those statements describe the developer’s advertised features; the listing’s claims are not independent confirmation that every page or element will transfer correctly. Poneglyph listing

After transfer, inspect the Medium draft yourself. In particular, check the canonical destination and the content the extension was meant to preserve. Medium supports setting a canonical link manually, and explains how to check the published page source for one. Medium Help Center: canonical links

Medium says its importer relies on a third-party service that interprets the source page as best it can. A page may produce an error or a blank result, so the native tool is not a guarantee that every site will import cleanly. Medium Help Center: import troubleshooting

How to choose
- Use Medium’s importer for a straightforward, rights-cleared article URL when its automatic date and canonical handling fit your needs.
- Consider an extension when it offers a specific transfer capability you need, and you are comfortable with its permissions and willing to verify the result.
- Use a manual draft if the importer fails or the transfer misses important content. Treat canonical settings as something to check rather than assume when you did not use Medium’s importer.
