If Chrome’s Save As dialog opens but keeps starting in Downloads, there may be no setting to make it reuse the last folder: Google documents a default download folder and a prompt to choose a destination for each file, but not a separate last-folder memory toggle. To save repeatedly to one folder, set it as Chrome’s default. If this behavior changed suddenly, update Chrome and restart it, then test again.
First, identify which download problem you have
- The destination prompt does not appear: Check whether Ask where to save each file before downloading is enabled.
- The prompt appears, but starts in Downloads: This is the last-folder issue. The prompt lets you choose a destination for each file; Google’s help does not promise that it will reopen at the folder chosen for the previous download. Google Chrome Help describes the documented controls.
Choose the download behavior that fits
Chrome provides two documented options: use one default folder, or choose a destination for each download. The prompt is a per-file choice, not a documented guarantee of last-folder recall.

| Option | What it does | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Default download location | Saves downloads to the folder you select in settings. | You usually save files to the same place and want to avoid navigating for each download. |
| Ask where to save each file before downloading | Opens a destination dialog for each download so you can choose where that file goes. | Different files belong in different folders, and you want to select the destination each time. |
Set a stable default folder
- In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu) > Settings > Downloads.
- Next to the download location, select Change, then choose the folder you want Chrome to use.
- If you want Chrome to prompt for individual downloads instead, turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading.
Google documents these default download paths when they have not been changed: \Users\<username>\Downloads on Windows 10 and later, /Users/<username>/Downloads on Mac, and /home/<username>/Downloads on Linux. A managed or customized installation may use a different location. See Google’s download settings instructions.

If the last-folder behavior changed recently
- Check your installed version at
chrome://settings/helpand let Chrome check for updates. - After an update completes, restart Chrome and try a download again.
- If the dialog still opens in the wrong folder, test a normal download from another site. Then compare the result with a fresh Chrome profile to help determine whether the behavior is limited to the original profile. These are diagnostic checks, not fixes Google documents for this symptom.
A Windows 11 user reported in July 2026 that Chrome’s Save As dialog kept opening at Downloads even with the prompt enabled. The user later said an update and computer restart resolved it; that is an individual report, not confirmation that a particular update fixes every installation. In a related Brave issue, users associated similar behavior with a Chromium 150 rebase, after reporting that Chromium 149 had offered the previous location. That comparison suggests a version-associated issue was reported in Chromium-based browsers, but does not establish that all Chrome users or platforms were affected. Brave community issue

Google announced Chrome 150 stable for Windows, Mac, and Linux on June 30, 2026, but its announcement and release notes do not identify this last-folder behavior or confirm a fix. The exact status in every current Chrome build is therefore not established here. Check your own version and test after updating rather than assuming a particular version is affected or fixed. For this specific symptom, the documented controls are the download location and the per-file prompt. The available Google help does not recommend clearing cache, changing automatic-download permissions, or deleting Chrome profile files to restore last-folder recall. Avoid making those changes as supposed fixes without evidence that they address your particular problem.
