Yes—malware on your device can steal Chrome data, including saved credentials and authentication cookies. Cookies are especially important: they can represent a session that is already signed in, so an attacker may reuse one without entering your password or completing two-factor authentication again. Chrome’s protections reduce several risks, but they cannot guarantee safety once malware can access browser data.
What Chrome data can an attacker use?
- Authentication cookies: These can let an attacker use an existing signed-in session. Google explains that cookie theft happens after login, so login-time two-factor authentication and reputation checks may not stop reuse. Google Chromium Blog, April 2, 2024.
- Saved passwords: Stolen credentials may expose accounts, especially if a password is reused elsewhere. Chrome Password Manager can store and autofill passwords. Google Chrome Help: Manage passwords in Chrome.
- Autofill details: Chrome can store addresses and payment information. Information held separately in Google Wallet may remain there even if you delete Chrome autofill data; manage each storage location separately. Google Chrome Help: Fill out forms automatically.
Can hackers steal Chrome cookies, and can they bypass two-factor authentication?
They can, if malware gets access to the device and browser data. A session cookie is different from a password: it can act as proof that login has already happened. Because the theft occurs after sign-in, an attacker may replay a stolen cookie without repeating the login step where a one-time code or other second factor is checked. Google says stolen cookies can remain usable even after malware is detected and removed, which is why session revocation matters as well as device cleanup. Google Chromium Blog.

Google describes social engineering and deceptive downloads as common ways cookie-stealing malware reaches users. The attacker may persuade someone to install a file despite security warnings; once running with the user’s access, malware may be able to read browser data. Do not override warnings for files or extensions you cannot verify. Google Chromium Blog.
What Chrome protections help—and where they stop
Chrome uses safeguards including Safe Browsing, sandboxing, site isolation, phishing protection and Safety Check. Safety Check can flag dangerous extensions, check saved passwords against known breaches, and identify security settings that need attention. Google says Chrome updates automatically every six weeks and that important security fixes may be pushed within 24 hours; that describes Google’s update process, not a guarantee that every device is current. Password Checkup compares encrypted credentials against an encrypted list of known breached data. Google says it does not learn your username or password through that process. You can check passwords through Google Password Manager or enable breach warnings in Chrome’s security settings. Google Chrome Help: Manage passwords in Chrome.
These browser features help reduce exposure to malicious sites, downloads, extensions and known-compromised passwords. They are not a promise that Chrome can shield local data from malware already running with access to the device. Google notes that sophisticated malware may read local files or memory holding browser authentication cookies. Google Chromium Blog.

Incognito mode is not a malware defense. Google says Chrome deletes Incognito browsing history after those windows close; that behavior does not prevent malware with device access from reaching browser data. Google Safety Center.

App-Bound Encryption on Windows
Google announced App-Bound Encryption in Chrome 127 for Windows, initially for cookies. Before that change, Chrome used Windows Data Protection API to protect sensitive data at rest, but Google said that mechanism did not protect against malicious applications running as the logged-in user. App-Bound Encryption checks the identity of the requesting application, making decryption by a different app harder. Google said an attacker may need additional steps such as gaining system privilege or injecting code, which may be more detectable. This raises the bar; it is not a guarantee against malware with elevated access. Google Security Blog, July 30, 2024.

Device Bound Session Credentials
In an update dated April 9, 2026, Google said Device Bound Session Credentials (DBSC) was entering public availability for Windows users on Chrome 146, with macOS expansion planned for a later release. DBSC binds supported sessions to a device-held, hardware-backed key, such as one protected by a Windows TPM or Apple Secure Enclave. The browser proves possession of that key to obtain new short-lived cookies, limiting how long a copied cookie can keep refreshing without the key. It is not universal: the platform, hardware and participating website must support it. Google Security Blog, April 9, 2026.
How to reduce your risk before an incident
- Keep Chrome and your operating system updated; check Chrome’s update status rather than assuming automatic updates have already been applied.
- Run Chrome Safety Check and review any dangerous-extension, password-breach or protection warnings it reports. Google Safety Center.
- Avoid unknown downloads and extensions, and do not bypass browser or operating-system warnings unless you can verify the file and its source.
- Use unique passwords for important accounts and run Password Checkup to identify known compromised credentials. This reduces password-based exposure but does not revoke a stolen session cookie. Google Chrome Help.
What to do if you suspect Chrome data was stolen
- Use a device you believe is clean. Avoid changing passwords from the potentially compromised device until you have reason to trust it.
- Secure important accounts. Change affected passwords, review account security activity, and enable strong sign-in protections. Prioritize email, financial and other accounts that can reset access to others.
- Revoke existing sessions. Use each service’s account security controls to sign out other devices or revoke sessions where available. Changing a password alone may not invalidate every stolen cookie.
- Investigate and remove the malware. Use trusted security tools or professional support to identify and clean the device. If the device remains untrusted, avoid using it to sign back in until it has been addressed.
- Review stored data. Check saved passwords and autofill information, and review Google Wallet separately if payment details may be involved.
Service-specific recovery controls vary; there is no single universal workflow. Treat account-session invalidation and malware cleanup as separate tasks, because removing the infection does not necessarily end sessions an attacker already copied. Google Chromium Blog.
