Google and Mozilla announced browser security updates on September 29, 2026, that together address more than 100 reported vulnerabilities. SecurityWeek counted 32 Chrome defects and approximately 76 Firefox issues. Update the browser you use promptly, then verify that the installation has completed.

Which browser versions contain the fixes?

SecurityWeek reported that Chrome 154 fixed 32 security defects and listed these platform versions: 154.0.8037.92/.93 for Windows and macOS, and 154.0.8037.92 for Linux. Chrome releases can roll out by platform, so the versions reported for the release are not a guarantee that every device has received the update. The Chrome counts and version details are reported by SecurityWeek.

Mozilla’s MFSA 2026-97, announced September 29, identifies Firefox 157 as the fixed release and rates the advisory’s overall impact as high. That overall rating does not mean every listed bug has the same severity: Mozilla assigns individual entries their own impact labels, including moderate and low.

Firefox Extended Support Releases

SecurityWeek reported that many of the Firefox 157 fixes were also addressed in Firefox ESR 153.4, 140.17, and 115.42. ESR users should check the installed channel and Mozilla’s security advisory index for the applicable update rather than switching to the standard Firefox release based only on its version number.

How many vulnerabilities were fixed?

SecurityWeek’s combined total is more than 100: 32 Chrome security defects and approximately 76 Firefox vulnerabilities. The Firefox figure is an approximate count summarized by SecurityWeek, not a total stated in Mozilla’s cited advisory.

For Chrome, SecurityWeek highlighted 25 high-severity weaknesses, including five high-severity type-confusion flaws in V8, Chrome’s JavaScript and WebAssembly engine. It also singled out a critical-severity ANGLE buffer overflow, CVE-2026-102331. These specific Chrome figures are attributed to SecurityWeek; Google’s linked release page was not available to independently confirm them.

SecurityWeek counted 38 high-severity defects among the approximately 76 Firefox issues. Mozilla’s advisory itself documents a range of bug types, including use-after-free issues, sandbox escapes, privilege escalation, uninitialized memory, incorrect boundary conditions, and problems affecting WebGPU, WebAssembly, networking, and browser components.

Were the vulnerabilities reported as exploited?

SecurityWeek reported that Google and Mozilla did not disclose in-the-wild exploitation of the listed flaws in the reports covered here. That is a statement about what the vendors disclosed in those reports, not proof that exploitation was impossible or that no flaw was exploited privately.

How to update Chrome or Firefox

Use the browser’s built-in updater and let it complete the installation. The exact menu wording can vary by operating system and release, but these built-in paths take you to the browser’s update screen:

  1. Chrome: Open the three-dot menu and choose Help > About Google Chrome. Allow Chrome to check for and install an available update, then relaunch if prompted.
  2. Firefox: Open the menu and choose Help > About Firefox. Let Firefox check for and install an available update, then restart if prompted.
  3. Confirm completion: Return to the browser’s About screen and check that it reports the installed version or that the browser is up to date. If no update appears, check again later or use the browser’s official update channel; availability can vary by platform and release channel.

Why Mozilla’s vulnerability counts may differ across releases

Mozilla says it has changed how it reports internally identified memory-safety bugs. In MFSA 2026-97, it explains: “We no longer roll all internally identified memory safety vulnerabilities into a single CVE and are now issuing an advisory for every individual bug.” That reporting change matters when comparing advisory counts across time: a change in how issues are listed can affect the number of entries without, by itself, showing that one release is safer than another.

The Chrome and Firefox totals also cover different products and reporting summaries. They are not a sound basis for deciding that one browser is safer overall.
