It opens a visible, user-controlled picker and returns the selected color as an sRGB hex value. It is not universally supported, and it does not provide coordinates or general screen-capture access, so feature detection and a fallback still matter.
What Chrome’s EyeDropper API does
Chrome for Developers describes the API as a way to use a browser-supplied eyedropper in a custom color picker. A web app can ask the browser to enter eyedropper mode; the user then selects a pixel, including one outside the requesting page, and the app receives its color. The API returns the color as a hex string in sRGB form through the result’s sRGBHex property—not an image, screen coordinates, or a stream of pixels.

The browser-mediated interaction is intentional. A user action must start the operation, the browser makes eyedropper mode visible, and the user chooses the pixel or cancels. This is not a way to sample the screen silently in the background. The [WICG explainer] also lists coordinate capture and a general color-object model as non-goals.
Use the native picker when it fits
For a basic “pick a color from the screen” workflow, detect the API and call it in response to a user action, such as clicking a button:

}The API is asynchronous: open() resolves with the selected color, or rejects when the user exits without selecting or the operation is aborted. Pressing Escape exits the picker. Pass an AbortSignal when the app needs to cancel an in-progress picker—for example, because the relevant interface state has changed. Handle both unsupported browsers and rejected calls; do not assume every invocation produces a color.

Check support and provide an alternative
Support is limited rather than universal. Chrome for Developers reports support in Chromium-based Chrome and Edge starting with version 95. That threshold is not a guarantee about every browser or environment; MDN labels the API as having limited availability. Use feature detection rather than relying on a broad browser or operating-system assumption.

When the API is unavailable, offer a suitable alternate way to choose a color, such as a color field or a picker limited to content your app can access. Do not assume a custom picker running inside a page can sample pixels elsewhere on the screen: the cited sources establish the browser API’s cross-page selection capability, not equivalent access for arbitrary page code. Make cancellation and keyboard use clear in the alternate flow as well.

When a custom picker still makes sense
The native API is a strong starting point, not a complete replacement for every color-selection feature. Decide based on what your product actually needs:
- Browser coverage: If the browsers your users rely on do not expose
EyeDropper, you need an alternate workflow. - Selection scope: The API can let the user select a screen pixel outside the page. If the product needs other forms of screen access, this API does not supply them.
- Output: It returns an sRGB hex color. If the product needs coordinates, an image, or a broader color data model, the API does not return those.
- User control: The picker is initiated by user action, visibly controlled by the browser, and cancellable. It is not a background sampling mechanism.
- Fallback quality: Weigh the engineering and accessibility work of maintaining an alternate workflow against the browsers and tasks your app must support; the available sources do not quantify that cost.
The underlying [WICG document] is a Community Group draft, not a W3C Standard or W3C Standards Track document. That status does not change the API’s practical purpose, but it is useful context when assessing its maturity.
