Yes. Chrome 155 adds support for displaying JPEG XL images: the browser can decode the web image type image/jxl, commonly stored in files with the .jxl extension. Google says the decoder is implemented in Blink using jxl-rs, a memory-safe decoder written in Rust.
What Chrome 155’s JPEG XL support means
With a compatible Chrome 155 installation, a JPEG XL image can be decoded by the browser rather than requiring a separate browser extension. The feature is built into Blink, Chrome’s rendering engine. Google identifies JPEG XL as the ISO/IEC 18181 image format.

Chrome’s release notes list progressive decoding, wide color gamut, HDR, high bit depth, and animation among JPEG XL’s capabilities. These describe what the format can support; they are not a promise that every image uses those features or that every display can show them fully.

Open the image’s direct web address in Chrome, or drag a local
.jxlfile into a Chrome window. The browser must receive the image in a form it can access, and the server should serve web images with theimage/jxlmedia type. -
If Chrome shows the image, decoding is working. If it does not, check the Chrome version and the image or server configuration; a failed display alone does not establish that the format is unsupported.

Chrome 145 had described JPEG XL decoding as an origin trial, gated behind the enable-jxl-image-format setting and the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. That was an earlier, restricted stage; Chrome 155’s release notes list decoding support in Blink as a release feature.

What the update does not tell you about image quality or speed
Google’s feature description does not provide comparative measurements showing that JPEG XL files are always smaller or faster to decode than AVIF, WebP, or JPEG. For a website, test representative images at comparable visual quality and consider file size, encoding workflow and cost, progressive rendering, HDR and wide-gamut needs, high bit depth, animation, and fallback behavior across the browser versions your audience uses.
