What the Free plan includes
Chromatic’s public pricing page, accessed on 2026-10-03, lists the Free plan at $0 per month with 5,000 billed snapshots per month. The listed inclusions are Chrome testing, unlimited projects and users, unlimited collaborators, Git and CI integrations, and UI version tracking.

The usage limit is an account-level pool shared across projects. Creating another project does not give the team another 5,000 snapshots. Unlimited projects and collaborators describe access and project capacity; they do not mean unlimited visual-test volume.
What happens when the team reaches 5,000 snapshots?
On Free, testing and review pause after the account consumes its included monthly snapshots. Chromatic says functionality resumes automatically when the next month begins, or immediately after upgrading. The allowance resets monthly; the Free plan itself does not expire.

What counts as a billed snapshot?
Chromatic counts visual screenshots and accessibility captures that are compared with a baseline. Its billing documentation specifies these rates:

How TurboSnap can change usage
TurboSnap uses Git history and the project’s Webpack or Vite dependency graph to identify stories affected by a change. It captures changed stories and copies unchanged baselines; a copied snapshot costs one fifth of a captured one. A qualifying build with no changes in any story dependency can be bypassed at zero billed snapshots.
Bypass is conditional, not a guarantee for every unchanged or merge build. Eligibility includes having a single ancestor build and using Chromatic CLI 17.7.0 or later. Teams should check whether their build qualifies rather than assume that any build with no visible story edits is free.

Browser coverage, projects and collaborators
The Free plan lists Chrome testing. Safari, Firefox and Edge are listed under Starter, not Free. Chromatic lists unlimited projects, users and collaborators on Free, and says it does not charge per seat. These limits do not increase the shared snapshot allowance.
How an Indian team can estimate monthly usage
Do not estimate usage from the number of Storybook stories alone. Consumption depends on which stories change, how often the team builds, enabled browsers and modes, and whether accessibility snapshots are run. TurboSnap can lower billed usage by copying unchanged baselines, but dependency changes and build eligibility affect the result.

- Check the account’s usage report to see actual billed snapshots across projects.
- Use Chromatic’s snapshot calculator to model the team’s own build and test workflow.
- When forecasting, include changed stories, build frequency, browser and mode coverage, and accessibility captures.
- Treat TurboSnap savings as workflow-dependent, and do not count on bypass credits unless the build meets the eligibility conditions.
What the published price means for teams in India
Chromatic’s public page displays USD pricing. It does not publish an India-specific converted amount, tax-inclusive estimate, or payment-method rule.
