Chromatic CI Build Failed with a Missing Storybook Error: How to Diagnose It

A Chromatic CI error that says Storybook is missing can mean a script, production build, output directory, or dependency problem. Follow the error to the right fix.

A Chromatic CI failure described as “missing Storybook” can point to several different problems: a missing build script, a failed production build, an invalid build directory, or a dependency that is unavailable when stories render. Start with the exact CLI error, then reproduce the production build locally; the wording and result determine which fix applies.

Identify what “missing Storybook” means in the CI log

Chromatic distinguishes among a missing build script, a failed Storybook build, a Storybook that will not start, broken Storybook output, and a missing dependency. A generic CI failure—or the title of a ticket—does not identify which one occurred. Find the first specific Chromatic error and its exit category before changing configuration. See Chromatic’s CLI troubleshooting documentation.

Observed failure First check Next action
“Build script not found” Does package.json define the script Chromatic expects, usually build-storybook? Add the script or configure the actual script name. For a custom build command, configure the command and its output directory.
Storybook build failed Does the production build fail when run locally? Fix the Storybook build error first, then rerun Chromatic.
A dependency or reference is missing when stories render Is the package declared and installed, and is the production bundler configured to include it? Correct the dependency or bundler configuration; use Storybook Doctor to check for project consistency issues.
Storybook output is invalid or cannot start Does the configured directory contain a valid built Storybook? Build and serve the output locally. If that succeeds, point Chromatic at that directory explicitly.
The cause remains unclear Have you reproduced the build and checked the command and output-directory configuration? Rerun with debug and diagnostics options and retain the CI log and diagnostics file.

Reproduce the production build before changing CI settings

Chromatic’s visual-testing workflow uses a production Storybook build, which can fail differently from storybook dev. Run the same build command used by the repository, then serve the resulting directory and confirm that stories load. Chromatic’s documented example is:

npm run build-storybook
npx http-server storybook-static -o

Use the project’s actual command and output path if they differ from build-storybook and storybook-static. If the build fails locally, focus on that build error rather than assuming Chromatic itself is at fault. Chromatic’s CLI guidance says of this failure mode: “This is a problem with your Storybook build, not with Chromatic.”

Fix the build-script or custom-command mismatch

By default, Chromatic looks for a build-storybook package script. Check the project’s package.json; the documented package-script pattern runs storybook build. If the project intentionally names the script differently, set buildScriptName or pass --build-script-name with the real name.

If the build is not a package script, configure buildCommand and identify the directory it produces. These settings solve different cases: buildScriptName selects an alternate package script, while buildCommand specifies a custom command. See the Chromatic configuration reference for supported configuration.

Check production-only errors and missing dependencies

If the local production build fails with an undefined reference or missing package, verify that the dependency is declared in the project and installed in the environment running the build. Also check that the bundler configuration includes it correctly for Storybook’s production build. A package available in a developer’s environment may still be absent from CI if it is not declared or installed there.

For project consistency checks, Chromatic’s quickstart recommends running Storybook Doctor from Storybook 7.6 onward:

npx storybook@latest doctor

It can detect issues such as mismatched Storybook versions, duplicate dependencies, and incompatible addons. Treat the results as diagnostic clues; a reported consistency issue does not by itself prove it caused this particular build failure. See Chromatic’s quickstart.

Point Chromatic at a prebuilt Storybook when appropriate

If your own production build succeeds but Chromatic is looking in the wrong place, pass the actual built Storybook directory with storybookBuildDir or --storybook-build-dir. Confirm that the directory contains valid output before setting it; pointing to an empty, stale, or unrelated folder will not fix the underlying problem. This option is for supplying prebuilt output, rather than renaming the build script or defining a custom command.

Collect diagnostics if the failure persists

After reproducing the problem and checking the script, command, dependencies, and output directory, rerun the CLI with diagnostic detail:

npx chromatic --project-token=<TOKEN> --dry-run --debug --diagnostics-file

Keep the complete CI log and generated diagnostics file. The configuration reference also documents a Storybook log-file option; use it when additional build logging is needed. Do not publish or share a project token in logs or support requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a “missing Storybook” CI failure always mean the Storybook package is not installed?

No. The message can refer to the build script, a failed or invalid production build, the output directory, or a dependency needed when stories render. Use the specific CLI error to identify the branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I start by changing Chromatic configuration?

Not usually. First run the repository’s production Storybook build locally and verify its output. Change Chromatic’s script or directory settings only when the command or output path is actually mismatched.
