Evaluate Argos, Percy, Applitools, BackstopJS, and Playwright’s screenshot assertions against that workflow—not as interchangeable products. For a separate, straightforward way to capture a page as an image or PDF, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first; it is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for a visual-regression test suite.
Start with the workflow, not the vendor list
Chromatic’s clearest documented fit is visual testing for Storybook stories. Storybook describes the basic model: capture stories and compare them with prior baselines. It says, “When you enable visual testing, every story is automatically turned into a test.” The described Storybook setup requires Storybook 7.6 or higher and uses the official @chromatic-com/storybook addon. See Storybook’s visual testing documentation.
That does not mean Chromatic is limited to Storybook. Its documentation also describes integrations with Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. Check the setup and capabilities against the exact versions and test patterns in your project before deciding that it cannot cover a particular use case. See Chromatic’s visual testing documentation.
Before shortlisting alternatives, answer these questions for each client project:
#1 Best Overall
- What are you testing? Component states represented by stories, full application flows, or both?
- Where should capture run? In a vendor’s cloud workflow or in the browser and CI environment your team already operates?
- What must be compared? Which browsers, viewport sizes, and visual states matter to the client?
- How will people review changes? Do reviewers need a PR-centered workflow, collaboration features, or baselines managed in the repository?
- How is usage measured? Check screenshot or snapshot counting, concurrency, and overage terms against your actual build volume.
- Who owns operations? Decide whether the agency wants a hosted service or can maintain capture, baselines, reporting, and review itself.
- What procurement constraints apply? Confirm data handling, security terms, regional requirements, payment, taxes, and contract terms directly with each vendor.
Alternatives to evaluate
The options below represent different operating models, not a universal ranking. Product descriptions and comparisons may be vendor-authored; validate a shortlisted tool in your own project.
| Option | When to evaluate it | What to verify in a pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Argos | Consider it if you value a PR-based review flow and want screenshots captured in your existing browser or test environment. Argos presents itself as an alternative to Chromatic in its Chromatic comparison. | Confirm how its workflow fits your CI, test environment, review process, browser and viewport needs, and usage model. |
| Percy (BrowserStack) | A candidate to assess if your agency already uses BrowserStack or its visual-testing workflow fits the project. Chromatic also publishes a Percy comparison. | Check the current product fit, capture requirements, review workflow, usage terms, and contract details with the vendor. |
| Applitools | Consider it when the product’s Visual AI approach is relevant to the client’s needs. The characterization here comes from a vendor-authored comparison. | Verify current capabilities and procurement terms directly, then test representative pages and states. |
| BackstopJS | Evaluate this self-managed option if the agency is willing to own the testing workflow and its operation. | Establish who maintains capture and baselines, how results are reported, and how client reviewers approve changes. |
| Playwright screenshot assertions | Worth considering when your team wants baselines in its repository and can manage review and maintenance within its existing CI process. | Try it against real application states and determine whether your CI and PR review process provides the collaboration your clients require. |
Chromatic’s official material also documents integrations with Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress, so compare the actual integration you need rather than treating “Storybook-based” and “application-flow testing” as mutually exclusive categories.

How to choose for an Indian agency
Match the tool to the test surface
If a client’s design system and UI states are already expressed as Storybook stories, begin with Chromatic’s Storybook workflow and compare alternatives on story coverage and review. If the main risk lies in user journeys through a running React application, test that journey directly and see whether the candidate fits your existing browser and CI setup. If both matter, run a pilot that includes stories and representative end-to-end states rather than assuming one workflow covers the other.
Measure operating cost using your own builds
Estimate the agency’s actual monthly capture volume, including how often PRs and branches trigger runs and how many browsers, viewports, or states are required. Then compare metering, concurrency, and any overage terms. A quoted monthly price without those details is not a useful agency cost estimate.
Rank #3
Confirm India-specific terms before recommending a platform
Available comparisons do not establish India-specific data residency, local support, tax treatment, payment methods, or procurement terms for these vendors. Ask each vendor about contractual data handling and regional requirements. Model the landed cost with the agency’s billing currency, applicable taxes, actual usage, and client billing approach; do not infer compliance or local support from a product comparison.
Use a proof of concept before committing
- Choose a representative client project. Include a few stable Storybook stories, if the project has them, plus the application flows and responsive states that matter most.
- Set the same capture expectations for each candidate. Define target browsers and viewports, baseline ownership, and what counts as an acceptable visual change.
- Run the workflow through a real pull request. Have the developers and client-side reviewers who will use the system assess the capture, comparison, and approval experience.
- Record operational details. Note where capture runs, how the team handles concurrency and usage, who maintains baselines, and what work the process adds to CI and review.
- Confirm commercial and security terms directly. Get current pricing and contract details, and have the client’s security or procurement stakeholders check data handling and regional requirements before recommending a tool.
Pricing figures need a dated caveat
An Argos-authored comparison published July 28, 2026, reports comparison figures of $100/month for Argos, $179/month for Chromatic Starter, and a $599/month Percy tier. These are vendor-published comparison figures, not independently verified current quotes. They do not establish Indian billing amounts, taxes, negotiated agency rates, or whether the prices remain current. Check each vendor’s official pricing and contract before using any figure in a proposal. The article is Argos’s “Percy Alternatives in 2026”.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean screenshot or PDF of a URL—not a baseline comparison—ScreenshotNeo can capture it with one GET request. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before a capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses say which outcome occurred in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
