Christa Pike survived Tennessee’s September 30, 2026, lethal-injection attempt and was taken to a hospital. Her attorneys said on October 2 that she was unconscious and on a ventilator; those updates came from her lawyers, not independent medical confirmation. Tennessee officials said the execution protocol was followed, while the governor ordered an independent review and paused further executions for the rest of 2026.
What happened during the execution attempt?
The Tennessee Supreme Court had set Pike’s execution for September 30, 2026, unless otherwise ordered. The court’s order is dated September 30, 2025 (Tennessee Supreme Court order).
Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection on the scheduled date. The Department of Correction said Pike was transported to an off-site medical facility and that its personnel followed every step of the state’s established protocol. In its September 30 media advisory, the department stated: “The Tennessee Department of Correction followed every step of the State’s lawful, established execution protocol approved by the Attorney General’s Office.” That is the department’s account, not an independently adjudicated finding (Department of Correction media advisory).
Associated Press reported on October 1 that two doses of pentobarbital were administered and the attempt was halted. The available accounts do not establish the technical reason the procedure failed.

What have her lawyers said about her condition?

On October 2, Pike’s attorneys said she was unconscious and on a ventilator. AP reported those medical details as statements from the lawyers and a court filing; they should not be treated as independent medical confirmation or a prognosis (Associated Press, October 2).

How have Tennessee officials responded?
The Department of Correction’s public position is that the state’s protocol was followed.
