Christa Pike’s attorneys said she was unconscious and on a ventilator in a hospital on October 2, two days after Tennessee’s attempt to execute her. The Associated Press reported that she was in critical condition and receiving lifesaving care. Those details are attributed to her attorneys; the latest reviewed report does not establish her condition after October 2.

What happened during the September 30 execution attempt?

An Associated Press eyewitness account reported that Pike continued breathing after two injections. The report said Tennessee’s protocol called for a second round of pentobarbital if an inmate was not deceased after the first round. The two injections took place during one execution attempt—not two separate attempts.

The Tennessee Department of Correction said that night that it had followed the state’s established execution protocol and transported Pike to an off-site medical facility. The department did not explain why the attempt had not resulted in her death.

What is known about Pike’s reported condition?

In an October 2 report, the AP described Pike’s attorneys as saying she was unconscious and on a ventilator in a hospital. The AP also reported that she was in critical condition and that hospital staff were providing lifesaving care. These are accounts attributed to her attorneys, based on their court filing; the reviewed reporting does not independently establish her medical status or provide a later update.

Why did the execution attempt fail?

The cause has not been established in the reviewed accounts. Pike’s attorneys alleged that problems with the IV lines meant pentobarbital entered her body rather than her bloodstream, and that a second dose was given without correcting the problem. They also reported arm injuries. Those are allegations by her counsel, not investigative findings. The AP reported that state officials had not explained the failure in the accounts it reviewed.

In the court filing quoted by the AP, Pike’s attorneys wrote: “Apparently at no point did any member of the execution team realize that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown and that the pentobarbital was, in whole or in part, entering Ms. Pike’s body.” The statement records counsel’s account; it does not establish the mechanism as fact.

What has Tennessee done since the attempt?

On October 2, the AP reported that Gov. Bill Lee paused executions and ordered an independent investigation. The AP described Pike’s case as Tennessee’s second unsuccessful execution attempt in four months. The reviewed sources do not contain completed investigative findings, so they do not establish a cause.

What does Pike’s court case concern?

A September 28 U.S. Supreme Court filing describes Pike’s challenge to Tennessee’s lethal-injection protocol and says the underlying litigation was still pending at that time. Because it predates the September 30 attempt, it does not establish her subsequent medical condition or explain why the execution attempt failed.
