Chris Hansen says Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of him in Primetime is “so detached, so unhinged, so dark, so unlikeable.” Hansen made the criticism after watching the completed film, which he said felt bizarre and far removed from his experience. His comments are his assessment—not an independently verified scene-by-scene account of the movie’s accuracy.
What did Chris Hansen say about Pattinson’s portrayal?
In a video posted to his Have A Seat With Chris Hansen channel, the former To Catch a Predator host said the film was “so bizarre and so in-and-out of reality.” He added, “I’m not sure what the point of it was.” Variety reported his reaction on September 28, 2026.

Hansen’s central objection was the characterization. He described “this version of Chris Hansen” as “so detached, so unhinged, so dark, so unlikeable.” He also said he did not like anything in the film and called it a hit piece on him and the series. Those are Hansen’s descriptions of the movie, not established statements of the filmmakers’ intent.

Did Hansen watch the finished film?
Yes. The criticism Variety reported came after Hansen watched the completed Primetime. He had earlier declined an advance screening following a dispute over a legal agreement, according to his account in the reporting. That earlier episode did not prevent him from eventually seeing the film.
Hansen also said the movie upset current and former colleagues. He reported that some former crew members praised the film’s work but became bored after about 30 minutes. These comments describe reactions Hansen relayed; they are not the result of an independently surveyed group of colleagues.
Is Primetime a true story or a biopic?
Primetime is billed as “inspired by true events,” not as a conventional biopic. Vanity Fair describes it as a surreal, fictionalized “media collage”. The distinction matters: the film draws on real people and a real television program, but that label does not promise a literal reconstruction of every event.

The film stars Pattinson as Hansen in 2006, as NBC developed the To Catch a Predator material toward a primetime attraction. Hansen’s complaint is that the portrayal and events depart sharply from his experience. The film’s stated fictionalized approach and Hansen’s criticism can both be reported without treating either as proof of exactly what happened in each scene.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What was To Catch a Predator?
To Catch a Predator began as a Dateline NBC segment in 2004. It used online decoys and sting operations to confront men alleged to have sought sex with children they met online. An on-camera confrontation or allegation should not be confused with a court finding or conviction.
That real-world subject gives Primetime historical context, but it does not settle the dispute over its dramatization. Hansen’s statements document his objection; the reporting cited here does not establish that every scene he challenged is inaccurate or that the movie is a factual account.
