Start with your exact drone and controller: the right flight app is the one the manufacturer supports for that combination. Then add a third-party app only if it supports your setup and provides a feature you need, such as automated routes or mapping. Airspace-awareness and authorization services do a different job from apps that control the aircraft.
Identify your drone and controller first
Find the full aircraft model name and the controller model before downloading an app or buying a phone. Compatibility can vary by aircraft generation, controller, mobile operating system and app version. Check the manufacturer’s current support page for that exact combination; a listing for one model does not establish support for another.

DJI Fly supports flight status, camera settings, shooting, editing and sharing for compatible products. Its current support page lists app versions, minimum operating systems and tested phone models. It currently specifies iOS 13.0 or later and recommends iPhone 11 or newer. For Android, it specifies Android 9.0 or later and recommends mainstream flagship phones released after 2019. These are DJI’s stated requirements and recommendations for DJI Fly, not a guarantee for every drone, controller or phone; consult the live tested-device list for your setup.

DJI enterprise aircraft
DJI Pilot 2 is listed for enterprise products including Matrice 4, Matrice 300 RTK, Matrice 30, Mavic 3 Enterprise, Matrice 350 RTK and Matrice 3D/3TD. DJI says Pilot 2 works only on controllers with built-in screens, updates with controller firmware and cannot be installed separately. It is therefore not a general-purpose phone app that replaces the intended enterprise controller setup. See DJI’s Pilot 2 product information and current app compatibility page.
Choose by the job you need the app to do
Apps that may appear in the same search results can perform very different tasks. Establish whether you need aircraft control, mission planning, image processing or airspace information before comparing products.

Keep the manufacturer’s app for maintenance tasks
A third-party app may handle a flight workflow without replacing the manufacturer’s software for setup and maintenance. DroneDeploy’s guidance says some settings and calibrations may need to be handled in DJI Fly or DJI GO 4, and recommends having firmware current before flying through DroneDeploy. Check the instructions for your exact aircraft rather than assuming one app handles every task.
For DJI third-party route features, Litchi’s documentation describes modes such as Track and readable flight logs. Its feature descriptions do not imply support for every DJI aircraft or controller; use its compatibility guide alongside the manufacturer’s requirements.

Separate airspace checks from flight control
In the United States, B4UFLY is an airspace-awareness service intended to help recreational drone flyers understand where they can and cannot fly. In an FAA announcement dated February 1, 2024, the agency listed Airspace Link, AutoPylot, Avision and UASidekick as B4UFLY service providers. Provider availability can change, so check current FAA information before choosing a service.
LAANC is a separate workflow through which pilots can request FAA authorization for eligible operations in controlled airspace below 400 feet. The FAA’s April 5, 2024 announcement explains that service suppliers do not independently grant flight access. B4UFLY awareness, a LAANC request and an aircraft-control app are not interchangeable. For a U.S. operation, check current FAA guidance and applicable requirements; elsewhere, use the relevant local aviation authority’s rules and services.

DroneDeploy also says its app does not restrict flight locations and that operators remain responsible for legal compliance. Its guidance recommends consulting an official airspace-awareness application. A route-planning or control app alone should not be treated as proof that a location or operation is permitted.
Check a phone or tablet before buying it
Do not buy a mobile device based only on a general app recommendation. First establish whether your controller needs a separate phone at all: some controllers have built-in screens. If yours uses a mobile device, verify the specific aircraft, controller, operating system and app requirements on the manufacturer’s current compatibility page. DJI’s tested-phone list can change, and its DJI Fly requirements should not be generalized to other brands.

A practical selection sequence
- Record the exact setup. Note the complete aircraft model, controller model and mobile device, if the controller uses one.
- Find the manufacturer-specified app. Use the current support page for your aircraft and controller, then confirm OS and device requirements.
- Define the extra task. Decide whether you need automated routes, mapping or image processing, rather than choosing an app simply because it is popular.
- Check support for that task and setup. Read the provider’s current aircraft matrix and distinguish flight control from processing support.
- Confirm maintenance and regulatory steps. Determine whether firmware, calibration or settings still require the native app, and check the applicable airspace service separately.
What to compare when apps overlap
- Aircraft and controller: Is the exact combination supported, or only a related model?
- Task: Does the app control the aircraft, plan routes, capture mapping data, process imagery or provide airspace information?
- Device and controller requirements: Which mobile operating systems and devices are supported, and does the setup require a built-in-screen controller?
- Maintenance: Are firmware updates, calibration or settings still handled in the manufacturer’s app?
- Region and regulatory role: Is the service available where you fly, and does it provide awareness, an authorization request workflow or something else?
- Price and terms: Check the provider directly for current pricing, subscription terms and support status; these vary and should not be assumed from a feature or compatibility listing.
