Choosing SASE for a Hybrid Workforce with Mixed Devices

SASE can bring networking and cloud-delivered security together for hybrid work, but device ownership affects what an organization can verify and control.

A SASE approach can connect employees and partners to the right enterprise resources while applying cloud-delivered security controls across offices, homes, and other locations. Its value in a device-heavy workplace depends on more than network access: organization-managed laptops, contractor devices, and employee-owned phones may offer very different security and management signals. SASE is one way to organize network and security capabilities—not a replacement for identity governance, endpoint security, or device management.

Why device ownership changes hybrid-work access

A managed laptop used at home, a contractor’s device, and an employee’s personal phone are not equivalent access points. An organization may be able to enroll, configure, monitor, and assess its own endpoints. A third party or employee may retain control of other devices, limiting what the organization can verify or change.

NIST’s telework guidance distinguishes devices controlled by the organization, a third party, or the teleworker. Its publications, SP 800-114 Rev. 1 and SP 800-46 Rev. 2, provide foundational telework and BYOD security context from 2016; use them for those ownership distinctions, not as a substitute for checking current organizational policy and technical requirements.

The access problem is to let each authorized person reach the resources needed for work—whether those resources are on premises or in the cloud—without assuming every device can be managed in the same way. That requires decisions about which device conditions matter, what access is appropriate when information is missing, and how exceptions are handled.

What SASE brings together

Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) is an approach that combines networking with cloud-delivered security capabilities. NIST’s SP 800-215, published in 2022, places SASE in a broader enterprise network landscape that includes point solutions, network configurations, security frameworks, and evolving wide-area networking. Capabilities associated with SASE can include:

  • Zero-trust network access (ZTNA): an approach for authorizing access to specific enterprise resources rather than treating network location alone as proof of trust.
  • Secure web gateway (SWG): security controls for web traffic.
  • Cloud access security broker (CASB): controls relevant to use of cloud services.
  • Firewall: traffic-control and security functions.
  • Software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN): networking capabilities for connecting sites and users.

The name SASE does not guarantee that every product includes the same features, integrations, or policy controls. Establish which capabilities are included, which are integrated from other services, and which must be supplied separately. NIST’s landscape guide is useful for understanding the categories, not for assuming a uniform product specification.

How SASE fits into zero-trust access

Zero trust focuses on authorizing access to particular resources in distributed environments, including systems on premises and in multiple clouds. NIST’s zero-trust implementation guidance addresses local and remote staff as well as partners, contractors, and guests. It includes SASE approaches as one way to implement secure access, rather than presenting SASE as a synonym for all of zero trust.

NIST’s zero-trust implementation project provides implementation context. Its SP 1800-35 project guide addresses hybrid access to on-premises and cloud resources. Together, these sources support evaluating whether a proposed design can apply access policy across the resources people actually use, regardless of whether they are working in an office or remotely.

What device-aware access can—and cannot—assume

A design may use identity and device information when deciding whether to authorize a request. The available information depends on the endpoint and implementation: a fully managed corporate device may expose different posture data from a personal or third-party device. The exact signals, policy mechanics, and enforcement options vary; confirm them for the specific platform and endpoint types in scope.

NIST’s example architectures include an endpoint agent and an identity-aware tunnel through a cloud secure web gateway after access is approved. This illustrates one possible flow, not a universal requirement to install a client or a guarantee that every device is compatible. See the NIST technical papers on zero-trust architectures for example designs.

For devices with limited organizational control, make the policy explicit: which resources are accessible, what evidence is required, what happens when posture data is absent, and how exceptions are approved and reviewed. These are implementation choices to resolve, not a single policy prescribed by the ownership categories.

How to evaluate a SASE design for a mixed-device workforce

Compare candidate designs against your actual user groups, endpoints, and application estate. NIST describes a landscape of point capabilities and integrated approaches; its guidance does not identify one design as right for every organization.

Evaluation area Questions to answer
Capability coverage and integration Which of ZTNA, SWG, CASB, firewall, and SD-WAN are included, integrated, or supplied separately? How do these services coordinate policy and operations?
Device coverage How does the design handle managed endpoints, employee-owned devices, contractor devices, and endpoints that cannot support a security agent? What access is available when device-management data is limited?
Application and resource reach Can the policy cover the organization’s private, on-premises, and cloud resources for both local and remote users?
Identity and device context What identity and device information can inform authorization? What is the outcome when a signal is missing, stale, or unavailable?
Operational fit How will the design fit existing network, endpoint, and identity practices? Who owns policy changes, troubleshooting, and exceptions?

Check product-specific behavior against the vendor’s current documentation: feature packaging and compatibility can change, and category names alone do not establish what a particular implementation can do.

Where SASE stops

SASE can help organize connectivity and security controls for distributed access, but it does not by itself establish that a user should have access, make an unmanaged endpoint safe, or replace endpoint protection and device administration. Identity governance still determines who is entitled to which resources; endpoint and device practices address the health and management of the devices themselves. Treat those as connected parts of the design rather than assuming a network platform resolves them all.
