It is not one universal thermometer: implementations may measure a temperature-sensitive liquid in a capillary or measure gas-phase temperature directly, and their demonstrated ranges and reactor setups differ.
Why measure temperature inside a reactor?
A reactor can have different temperatures in different locations. A sensor on the outside—or one reading from a single point—may not show those internal variations. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) offers a non-invasive way to investigate temperature patterns through an NMR-compatible setup, helping engineers understand where a reactor is heating or cooling unevenly and assess possible design improvements. “NMR thermometry” refers to a family of measurement approaches, not a single off-the-shelf device. The relevant questions are what material is being measured, whether the method resolves different locations, what temperature range a particular study demonstrated, and how its hardware fits the reactor and NMR system.
How the ethylene-glycol capillary method works
In the University of Bremen dissertation method, fused glass capillaries filled with ethylene glycol were inserted into a monolithic catalyst to measure temperatures along its axis and near its wall. The separation between two ethylene-glycol NMR signals changes linearly with temperature in that implementation. Measuring the signal separation therefore provides a temperature reading for the liquid in the capillary.

The capillary arrangement can support measurements at multiple points and was used alongside magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI). The dissertation reports a measurement range up to 165 °C for this specific implementation; that figure is not a general upper limit for NMR thermometry. Because a capillary can conduct heat and alter the temperature profile being measured, the study checked for distortion under a steep temperature gradient before using it.
How direct gas-phase NMR thermometry differs
A separate approach measures gas-phase temperature directly rather than inferring reactor temperature from a thermometer liquid inside a capillary. A 2022 Chemical Engineering Journal abstract reports spatially resolved, in-situ NMR measurements of gas-phase temperature above 350 °C. It also reports simultaneous temperature and density measurement and compares the approach with NMR thermometry based on diffusion coefficients. Those are capabilities reported for that study, not guarantees for every reactor, gas, reaction, or instrument. The abstract-level information does not establish universal compatibility or provide enough detail to assume that a given laboratory can reproduce the measurement without consulting the full paper and its experimental requirements.

The values in the table describe different measurement targets and experiments. They should not be read as a head-to-head performance comparison: one method measures a thermometer sample in a capillary, while the other reports direct gas-phase measurement.

What an NMR thermometer standard measures—and what it does not
“NMR thermometer” can also refer to a sample-temperature system for routine NMR experiments, which is distinct from mapping temperatures inside a chemical reactor. For example, Bruker’s 2012 announcement for its AVANCE III HD system describes measuring the chemical-shift difference between two deuterium resonances; one signal supports field stabilization, while the difference is used with SmartVT for temperature measurement and control. Bruker claimed up to 50% faster online regulation and up to a factor-five improvement in signal-frequency accuracy for that system. These are vendor-reported claims about that implementation, not independent evidence about reactor thermometry. Bruker’s announcement does not establish that this system was used in the reactor experiments described above.
A standard sample or routine instrument temperature-control system should therefore not be assumed to reveal hot and cold spots inside a reactor. Reactor measurements depend on the target material, spatial arrangement, reactor geometry, and NMR-compatible instrumentation.

What to check when evaluating a reactor thermometry method
- Measurement target: Is the method measuring gas directly or a temperature-sensitive sample such as ethylene glycol in a capillary?
- Spatial resolution: Does the configuration produce readings at several locations or a spatially resolved map, or only a sample-temperature value?
- Demonstrated range: Check the range reported for the exact implementation, not for NMR thermometry as a whole.
- Thermal disturbance: Consider whether probes or capillaries conduct heat and alter the profile being measured.
- System fit: Confirm the reactor arrangement and measurement hardware are compatible with the NMR experiment; a result from one setup does not guarantee transfer to another.
