Choosing an HPE ProLiant Server: Match the Model to Your Workload

Match an HPE ProLiant server to your workload, growth plan and site. Learn how to compare tower, rack and high-density options and validate the quoted configuration.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose an HPE ProLiant server by sizing the workload and the place it will run—not by picking a family name first. Define compute, memory, storage, networking, availability and growth needs; then compare a tower, rack or high-density system against the site and confirm the exact configuration in current QuickSpecs and a local quote.

Start with the work the server must do

Write down the applications and services the server will host, how many people or processes will use them at once, and what performance and availability they require. Include expected growth so the system has suitable headroom rather than merely meeting day-one demand.

Translate those requirements into hardware and operational needs:

  • Compute: processor architecture, socket count and core capacity for the workload.
  • Memory: required capacity and a supported DIMM configuration, especially for virtualization and databases.
  • Storage: drive type, number, performance and usable capacity after accounting for resilience needs.
  • Connectivity and expansion: network adapters, PCIe slots and any accelerator or GPU support required.
  • Operations: remote management, security, service access and availability targets.

Virtualization, databases, file services, VDI, edge processing and AI can place very different demands on these resources. HPE’s ProLiant portfolio comparison organizes systems by workload and hardware dimensions; use it to shortlist, not to replace workload sizing.

#1 Best Overall
Hewlett Packard Enterprise ProLiant MicroServer Gen11 Tower Server with Intel Xeon 6325P, 32GB DDR5, 4TB HDD, 4LFF Bays, 180W PSU (P86771-005)
  • 3.50 GHz processor speed ensures efficient operation with consistent reliability
  • Intel Xeon 3.50 GHz processor provides enterprise-grade performance with built-in security and remote management capabilities
  • Quad-core (4 Core) processor core handles data efficiently for faster processing and better usability
  • 1 processors supported for optimal performance and maximum reliability in mission-critical server environments
  • With 32 GB memory, improve system performance and reduce processing delays

Choose a form factor that fits the site

HPE positions its DL family for rack-oriented data-center, virtualization, hybrid-cloud and general enterprise deployments. ML systems include tower or rack-convertible options used in small and midsize businesses, remote offices and edge environments. XD systems target dense, demanding AI, model-training, analytics and GPU-computing workloads. These are broad portfolio positions, not a substitute for checking each model’s supported configuration. See HPE’s portfolio comparison.

  • Tower: can be practical where there is no server rack, but consider placement, noise, cooling, power and service access.
  • Rack: can suit existing rack infrastructure; check rack space and depth, power and cooling capacity, cabling and access for maintenance.
  • High-density systems: consider only when the workload justifies their specialized compute and site requirements.

Consult the exact model’s installation guide to confirm site requirements. A rack-convertible chassis does not remove the need to assess rack fit, power, cooling and service access.

Rank #2
Hewlett Packard Enterprise ProLiant MicroServer Gen11 Tower Server with Intel Xeon 6315P, 16GB DDR5, 4LFF Bays, 180W PSU (P86811-005)
  • 2.80 GHz processor speed ensures efficient operation with consistent reliability
  • Intel Xeon 2.80 GHz processor provides enterprise-grade performance with built-in security and remote management capabilities

  • 1 processors supported for faster processing and improved access to data, optimizing performance under heavy loads
  • With 16 GB memory, you can multitask between applications seamlessly, keeping productivity high and response times quick

Compare tower candidates by scale and options

HPE’s MicroServer Gen11, ML30 Gen11, ML110 Gen11 and ML350 Gen11 lines offer different starting points. Treat each as a candidate to investigate, not a recommendation based on its name alone.

Candidate What HPE’s material establishes What to verify
MicroServer Gen11 Listed for small-business and remote-site contexts in HPE’s portfolio material. Whether its supported processor, memory, storage and expansion meet the workload and growth plan.
ML30 Gen11 HPE describes the tower line for small and remote or branch offices; its store product text lists optional redundant power and drive or expansion options. See the HPE Store. Which options are supported by the precise SKU and configuration being quoted.
ML110 Gen11 HPE describes a single-processor tower with expansion and a tower-to-rack conversion option. See the HPE Store. The exact configuration’s supported capacity and expansion options; do not assume a capability shown for one configuration applies to all SKUs.
ML350 Gen11 HPE describes a two-processor tower with an optional rackable chassis and associates it with a wider range of demanding workloads. See the HPE Store. Whether the extra capacity or expansion is justified by the workload, and which chassis and options are included in the quote.

For rack deployments, compare DL models against the same workload and site requirements. For dense accelerated computing, assess XD systems rather than treating a general-purpose tower as interchangeable. HPE outlines these portfolio categories in its comparison page.

Choose a generation using model-specific facts

HPE positions Gen11 as suitable for many current infrastructure needs and describes Gen12 as designed for next-generation performance, security, efficiency and automation. Depending on the model, Gen12 may offer newer processors, updated iLO, expanded memory or storage configurations, PCIe Gen5 or liquid cooling; the portfolio covers workloads ranging from VDI to AI. These features are model-dependent, not guaranteed across every Gen12 system. HPE’s portfolio material is a starting point; confirm supported features in the selected model’s current QuickSpecs.

Compare the exact configuration’s software support, lifecycle, service coverage and total cost. A newer generation is not automatically the better fit if the workload, compatibility needs or quoted configuration point elsewhere.

Validate the exact configuration before buying

  1. Check current QuickSpecs. Confirm the supported processor, memory population, storage devices, networking, PCIe expansion, GPU support and management or security features for the exact model and configuration.
  2. Check the site and operating environment. Confirm rack or tower fit, power, cooling, noise, cabling and service access against the installation guide.
  3. Check the full workload solution. Verify operating system and licensing, required drives and adapters, resilience needs, software compatibility and service term.
  4. Request a written regional quote. HPE identifies HPE, authorized resellers and enterprise technology partners as purchase routes. Its store provides product and quote routes and recommends HPE or an authorized partner for specialized configurations. See the HPE Store and HPE purchase guidance.
  5. Review what the quote actually includes. Confirm SKU, options, stock, currency, tax, support and warranty terms, and any operating-system or licensing costs before ordering.
