The right authentication-as-a-service (AaaS) provider depends on who signs in and what your application needs identity to do. A consumer app, a B2B service with organization management, and an enterprise identity program do not necessarily need the same product. This 12-name shortlist is a starting point, not a defensible universal ranking: current, comparable feature and price details are not established for every provider.
What to compare before choosing
Compare providers against the same requirements and at the same expected usage. A feature can exist on a platform without being included in the plan you would buy, and a user-count metric from one provider may not be equivalent to another’s.

- Application and customer type: Decide whether you need consumer sign-in, B2B organization management and enterprise SSO, or broader enterprise identity capabilities.
- Billable users and volume: Check how the provider defines a billable user, what activity counts, what volume is included, and what happens when you exceed it.
- Authentication methods and protection: Verify the social login, passwordless, passkey, MFA, and risk-protection methods you need, including which plan includes each one.
- Organization and enterprise features: Check role support, SAML or OIDC single sign-on, SCIM provisioning, audit controls, and whether they require a higher tier or add-on.
- Integration and operations: Confirm framework and SDK fit, hosting and data-residency choices, deployment options, compliance commitments, support, and SLA.
- Exit path: Establish what identity data you can export and how you would migrate users and authentication flows if you change providers.
Do not compare plans by headline price alone. Normalize the billable-user definition, included volume, required paid tier, and add-ons for your expected usage. The March 2026 comparison of authentication APIs describes Clerk’s billing in monthly returning users (MRU) and contrasts it with the monthly active user (MAU) measure used by many competitors; it also notes that SSO and MFA can depend on plan. Treat that as a dated comparison, not confirmation of October 2026 terms. Read the comparison’s explanation of authentication API pricing and features.

Adjacent enterprise identity candidate

How MAU and MRU pricing change the comparison
MAU means monthly active users; MRU means monthly returning users. In the March 2026 comparison, MRU excludes users who sign up but do not return after their first day, while MAU is described as a broader active-user measure. That difference can change the billable count even when two applications have the same sign-up volume. The exact definition and counting rules are provider-specific, so check each provider’s current billing terms before estimating cost.

A practical selection process
- Write down the use case: Identify whether the application is B2C, B2B with organization needs, or part of a broader enterprise identity program.
- Set the must-haves: Specify login methods, passkeys or passwordless support, MFA, roles, SSO, SCIM, audit requirements, and the SDK or framework integrations you need.
- Check plan gates: For every candidate, distinguish platform capability from what is included in the plan at your expected scale. Note add-ons and higher-tier requirements.
- Normalize cost: Apply each provider’s billable-user definition to your own usage forecast, then compare the required plans and included volumes.
- Review operating constraints: Confirm data residency, hosting and deployment choices, compliance commitments, support and SLA, and any requirements for control over identity data.
- Plan for change: Before committing, establish what can be exported and how users and authentication flows could move to another provider.
What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
The sources support a set of 12 names to investigate and current Auth0 plan prices, but they do not establish comparable October 2026 pricing and feature terms for all 12. The broad comparison’s free-tier examples for several providers are from its March 2026 snapshot and should not be treated as verified current offers. Check each provider’s current official pricing and product documentation for your geography and requirements before making a purchase decision.
