Choosing a Windows Native App Framework in 2026: A Practical Route Through the Mess

Microsoft recommends WinUI 3 for new general-purpose Windows desktop apps, but .NET MAUI, WPF, Windows Forms, and Win32 fit different needs.

For a new Windows-only desktop app, start with WinUI 3 and the Windows App SDK. Choose .NET MAUI when one shared .NET app must also target macOS, iOS, or Android; keep WPF or Windows Forms when maintaining an established app; and use Win32 when direct, low-level Windows or hardware access is central. These are choices for different needs—not rungs on a single ladder.

Choose by the app you need to build

Your situation Practical starting point Why it fits
New, general-purpose Windows desktop app WinUI 3 with the Windows App SDK Microsoft’s current recommendation; uses XAML with C# or C++ and provides Fluent-styled controls.
Existing WPF or Windows Forms application Keep the current framework; add Windows App SDK capabilities if needed Modernize incrementally without making a UI rewrite the starting assumption.
One shared app for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android .NET MAUI Shares a C# and XAML approach; its Windows target uses WinUI and the Windows App SDK.
Direct Windows, hardware, or DirectX access is a defining requirement Win32, commonly with C++ Provides direct access to Windows capabilities and suits scenarios where low-level control matters.
Rapid data-entry or line-of-business app Windows Forms may fit Offers a drag-and-drop visual designer and built-in controls for rapid application development.
Modernize a WPF app’s Windows capabilities without replacing its UI Assess incremental modernization first You may be able to add platform APIs while retaining the existing interface.

Microsoft Learn’s Windows developer FAQ recommends WinUI 3 for a new general-purpose Windows desktop app and says developers with substantial WPF investment can continue using it for existing apps. The same FAQ describes WPF as supported, with ongoing improvements in modern .NET. That makes “new app” versus “existing product” a more useful dividing line than a blanket ranking of frameworks.

Understand what the names refer to

Windows development feels confusing partly because the labels describe different layers. The Windows SDK provides operating-system APIs and build tools. The Windows App SDK is a separately delivered set of desktop components, including WinUI 3 and APIs for areas such as windowing, app lifecycle, and notifications. It complements the Windows SDK rather than replacing it.

  • WinUI 3 is a user-interface framework delivered as part of the Windows App SDK. It uses XAML with C# or C++.
  • WPF, Windows Forms, MFC, and Win32 are other ways to build Windows applications. Existing applications can use selected Windows App SDK APIs without replacing their current UI framework.
  • .NET MAUI is a cross-platform framework. Its Windows implementation uses WinUI; it is not simply another name for WinUI 3.

Knowing which layer a feature belongs to helps with decisions about APIs, app identity, deployment, and supported operating-system versions. The framework that draws the UI and the SDK that provides a capability are not always the same thing.

Decide whether you need a new UI or new Windows capabilities

For a new Windows-only app

WinUI 3 is Microsoft’s current recommendation for a new general-purpose Windows desktop app. It is the natural starting point if you want to build a new interface using XAML and current Windows UI conventions. It is not a requirement for every Windows app: a specific need for cross-platform sharing, an existing codebase, rapid form-based development, or low-level access can point elsewhere.

For an established WPF or Windows Forms app

Do not treat a framework choice for a new project as a mandate to rewrite an existing one. Microsoft describes adding supported Windows App SDK features to WPF, Windows Forms, MFC, and Win32 apps while keeping their current UI. Depending on the app’s needs, modernization may involve platform APIs, package identity, MSIX deployment, or other newer Windows features.

A full move to a different UI framework is separate work. It can involve project configuration, API differences, component-library availability, and app-model decisions. Consider it when requirements justify replacing the interface—not simply because a newer framework exists.

For an existing UWP app

UWP and WinUI 2 are not formally deprecated, according to Microsoft’s Windows developer FAQ. If an existing app meets its needs, continuing on UWP can be reasonable. Moving from UWP to WinUI 3 is not just a namespace change: project setup, .NET migration, control-library coverage, windowing APIs, and C++/CX migration may matter. Some device or app-model requirements, including Xbox and HoloLens scenarios, may also favor staying on UWP.

Check platform support and deployment before committing

Microsoft’s Windows App SDK overview lists support for Windows 10 version 1809 and later. The Windows developer FAQ qualifies that support: the Windows release and the particular Windows App SDK version must both remain within their respective lifecycles. Treat the OS floor as something to verify for the exact SDK version you plan to ship, not as a timeless guarantee.

Deployment choice also affects setup. Some Windows App SDK capabilities require package identity. Framework-dependent unpackaged apps need the relevant Windows App SDK runtime initialized; packaged and self-contained approaches have different setup implications. Confirm the current deployment guidance for your chosen SDK version and app model before settling your installation and update strategy.

For a new project, Microsoft’s current Windows guidance points developers to install the .NET SDK and Visual Studio with the WinUI workload, then follow the WinUI 3 quickstart. Windows App SDK package versions and project templates can change, so verify the current instructions when creating the project.

Know what WinUI development tools do—and do not—provide

Microsoft says Visual Studio 2026 offers the richest integrated WinUI editing, debugging, profiling, and XAML Hot Reload experience. There is currently no Visual Studio design surface for WinUI 3. The documented workflow relies on tools such as XAML Hot Reload and Live Visual Tree to inspect changes while the app runs, rather than a visual designer surface.

That limitation is a tooling trade-off, not a prohibition on using other editors. WinUI builds use MSBuild, and the .NET SDK and current templates support command-line builds. Developers who expect a drag-and-drop designer should weigh that workflow difference before choosing WinUI; Windows Forms retains its visual designer.

Use a short decision check before you start

  • Are you building only for Windows? For a new general-purpose desktop app, begin with WinUI 3; for an established app, first see whether its current framework already meets the need.
  • Must the same app target mobile or macOS? Evaluate .NET MAUI against the actual platform and UI requirements.
  • Does the app depend on direct hardware, OS, or DirectX access? Assess Win32 and C++.
  • Is a visual designer central to the workflow? Windows Forms has one; WinUI 3 currently does not have a Visual Studio design surface.
  • Are you replacing an existing UI? Compare the required capabilities with incremental modernization before taking on a migration.
  • Have you confirmed the deployment model and minimum supported Windows version? Check both against the exact Windows App SDK version you intend to use.

The recommendation is scenario-specific: Microsoft’s official guidance favors WinUI 3 for a new general-purpose Windows desktop app, but it does not make every mature WPF or Windows Forms product obsolete or make WinUI the right answer for a shared mobile-and-desktop codebase.
