Choosing a Domain Name for the First Time? Remember These Points

A first domain registration gives you a name and account settings—not a website. Compare sellers, renewal costs, transfer terms and account access before you buy.

Choose a name that is easy for your audience to recognize and use, then compare registrars by the full renewal cost, account access, support, agreement and transfer terms—not just the first-year price. Registering a domain gives you a time-limited registration and control of its settings through a registrar; it does not automatically give you a website or email service.

How to choose a domain name for your website

A domain name is a memorable label that DNS uses in place of a numerical IP address. People can use it to reach a website or another service associated with the name. ICANN explains the basics in About Domain Names.

Start with the people who need to find or remember you. A useful name should be easy to say, spell and share, and should make sense for the site or project you intend to build. Before settling on one, check that the seller offers it and that the name works in DNS. You can explore different domain endings, or top-level domains (TLDs), but there is no universally best ending for every audience or location.

If a name is important to a business or organization, consider whether it could be confused with another name. The available guidance here does not establish whether a specific name is legally clear; trademark rules and rights depend on the name and jurisdiction.

What to check before buying a domain

When you register a domain, you enter a contract with a registrar. The registrant—the individual or organization registering the name—manages its settings through that registrar and should be able to access information about registration, management, transfer, renewal and restoration. Read ICANN’s information for domain name registrants before you commit.

The seller may be an ICANN-accredited registrar or a reseller selling services under an agreement with a registrar. ICANN maintains a guide to registering domain names. Country-code domain endings may instead be registered through the relevant country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) operator.

  • Who is selling it? Identify the registrar behind the offer and whether you are buying through a reseller.
  • What is included, and what costs extra? Read the registration agreement and check fees, renewal charges and any other terms that matter to you.
  • Can you control the account? If a designer, agency or other third party will manage the domain, make sure you—not only that provider—have the account credentials and access you need.
  • How does a transfer work? Review the conditions and process for moving the name to another registrar.
  • What support can you get? Look into the seller’s customer-service options before a problem arises.

ICANN’s advice for people thinking about registering a domain recommends checking the seller, customer service, agreement, fees, transfer terms and account access. These checks are more useful than choosing a registrar based only on an introductory offer.

How much does it cost to renew a domain?

ICANN says a domain registration commonly runs for one to ten years. The renewal options and fees depend on the registrar, and a promotional first-year price may be lower than the amount charged later. Check the renewal price and terms before registering; a low initial fee does not tell you what keeping the name will cost.

As ICANN puts it in its renewal and expiration FAQ: “A common practice with many goods and services, including domain name registrations, is to offer promotions for new customers, which is why your initial registration fee may be less than the cost to renew after your initial registration period.” Actual prices vary by seller and are not established here.

How to keep a domain from expiring

Put the expiration date on your calendar and keep the registrant contact details current so notices can reach you. ICANN says registrars are required to send two renewal reminders, approximately one month and one week before expiration. Those reminders are useful, but you should still track the date yourself.

You can consider enabling auto-renewal if you want the registrar to renew the name automatically. If you do, keep the payment information current and check that the renewal terms are acceptable. ICANN’s FAQ for registrants covers reminders, expiration and renewal.

Is a domain name the same as a website?

No. A domain is an address people can use; it is not the website itself. To make a site available, you also need hosting or another service that stores or serves its content, then configure the domain to use that service. Domain registration and hosting can be obtained separately, so you do not have to buy hosting from the registrar.

Email is separate as well. You can use a domain for email after obtaining or setting up an email service and configuring the domain for it. ICANN’s About Domain Names explains the distinction between a domain, a website and services such as hosting and email.
