After a power outage, choose the reset for the symptom you actually see: a blank or unresponsive panel, a Family Hub screen, an error code, or a refrigerator that is not cooling. Samsung does not recommend unplugging the appliance routinely; first photograph any error code, since resetting can erase diagnostic history. The power-off interval also differs by symptom and model.
Before resetting, identify the symptom
- Panel is blank, but the refrigerator seems to have power: Touch the panel or open the door first; many displays sleep when inactive. Check whether Sabbath mode applies. Family Hub screens have a separate internal display switch.
- Panel does not respond: Check whether Child Lock, Control Lock, or Dispenser Lock is enabled before interrupting power.
- No lights and no cooling: Treat this as a power-supply issue, not just a display problem. Check the breaker and outlet. If the breaker repeatedly trips, contact an electrician or Samsung service, depending on whether the problem appears to follow the refrigerator.
- Error code is showing: Photograph it before doing anything. Samsung warns that a reset can clear stored error history and make diagnosis harder.
Samsung says it recommends resetting or unplugging only when troubleshooting directs it, when moving the refrigerator, or when cleaning it. See Samsung’s reset guidance.

Choose the reset for your Samsung refrigerator
| Symptom or model | What to do | Power interruption |
|---|---|---|
| Blank non-Family Hub panel | After checking that the display is not asleep, interrupt power and restore it. | 60 seconds, according to Samsung’s blank-panel instructions. |
| Family Hub screen is blank | Use the internal display switch; do not begin by unplugging the whole refrigerator just to reset the screen. See Samsung’s screen guidance. | Use the model’s internal display switch instructions. |
| Panel does not respond | Check locks first, then follow Samsung’s troubleshooting for the panel. | 60 seconds, according to Samsung’s unresponsive-panel instructions. |
| General reset or 88 88 after an outage | Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its circuit breaker, then restore power. | About five minutes under Samsung’s general reset procedure. |
| Cooling troubleshooting | Use the power cycle specified in Samsung’s cooling guidance, then allow time for cooling to recover. | Two minutes, according to Samsung’s cooling troubleshooting. |
| Refrigerator sold in Canada | Follow Samsung Canada’s regional instructions and the model manual. | One to five minutes, per Samsung Canada’s guidance updated February 21, 2026: Restore power to your refrigerator. |
These intervals are not interchangeable universal rules. Use the instruction for the exact symptom and model; consult the refrigerator manual if its controls differ.
What to do with an error code or flashing icons
Samsung associates 88 88 with a communication fault that may occur if power is disrupted during boot-up; 83E with compressor abnormal-current detection; 85E with compressor under-voltage; and 86E with compressor over-voltage. These may follow an electrical anomaly. Photograph the code, then follow Samsung’s error-code guidance. For this listed group, Samsung directs a 60-second power interruption; if the error returns, request service rather than repeatedly resetting the refrigerator or trying to hide the code.

- COUNTER DEPTH: Built-in look for a seamless fit. The smooth and streamlined exterior design features beautiful flat doors and easy-to-open recessed handles that blend seamlessly into your cabinetry, adding function and style to your kitchen.
- WiFi CONNECTIVITY: Wi-Fi connectivity on your fridge isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s essential for safety and energy conservation. You’ll get immediate notifications if the temperature drops due to a power outage or if you accidentally leave the door open.
- TWIN COOLING PLUS: Independent fridge and freezer controls keep food fresher, longer.
- ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED: Eco-friendly and energy-efficient.
- FINGERPRINT-RESISTANT FINISH: Finish that withstands everyday smudges so you spend less time cleaning.
If all icons flash just after power returns or the refrigerator is plugged in, Samsung says this can be normal self-diagnostic behavior. If a different or unusual code remains, keep a photo and use the error-code guide to determine next steps.
If the temperature display keeps blinking
A blinking temperature display can mean a compartment has warmed above 59°F, according to Samsung’s U.S. temperature-display troubleshooting. After an outage, the display may continue blinking as the refrigerator cools; Samsung says this may take up to four hours if the appliance is otherwise working correctly.

Display recovery and reaching the selected temperature are separate stages. Samsung’s cooling troubleshooting says the panel may take up to four hours to show the set temperature, while the refrigerator may take up to 28 hours to reach it under the conditions described on that page. Those figures are not a guarantee for every outage, and they do not establish that food is safe during recovery.

When to stop troubleshooting and request service
- The listed outage-related code returns after the prescribed 60-second power cycle.
- A different error remains or reappears; retain the photo for the technician.
- The refrigerator still does not cool correctly after the recovery period relevant to the symptom and model.
- The breaker repeatedly trips. Seek an electrician or Samsung service according to whether the problem follows the refrigerator.
An error code alone does not establish a failed compressor, control board, or wiring. Samsung’s guidance does not provide one repair procedure for every model, so use Samsung’s error-code support or request service when the issue persists.
