Choose the Right microSD Card for Your Tablet: Compatibility First

There is no universal best memory card for tablets. Confirm your exact model’s microSD support and maximum capacity, then match speed class and storage needs.

The right memory card for a tablet is the one the exact model supports—not a universal “best” card. Check that your tablet has a microSD slot, confirm its maximum supported capacity, then match the card’s speed class to the tablet and your use. Samsung’s EVO Plus and PRO Plus are examples their maker lists as tablet-compatible, but neither fits every tablet or capacity limit.

Check your tablet before choosing a card

Start with the tablet’s full model name and generation. Look it up in the manufacturer’s current specifications or support materials and confirm both that it has a microSD slot and the maximum card capacity it accepts. Do not rely on a family name such as “Galaxy Tab” or “Fire tablet”: slot availability and capacity can differ across models and generations.

  1. Find the exact model. Check the device settings, packaging, or the label on the tablet for its model number and generation.
  2. Verify the slot. Consult the manufacturer’s specifications for that model. A tablet without a microSD slot cannot use a removable card.
  3. Check the supported maximum. Use the model-specific capacity limit, not the capacity range allowed by the card standard.
  4. Confirm regional specifications. Models sold in different markets may have different specifications; Samsung specifically notes regional differences in its UK support information.

For example, Amazon’s Fire tablet troubleshooting guidance lists maximums of 200GB for 5th- and 6th-generation tablets, 256GB for 7th generation, 512GB for 8th and 9th generation, and 1TB for 10th generation and newer. These limits apply to the generations Amazon identifies, not to every tablet with the Fire name.

Samsung UK’s model table gives examples including up to 1TB for Galaxy Tab S7 and S6 models, up to 512GB for Galaxy Tab S5e and some A models, and 256GB for Galaxy Tab S3. Samsung says those listed limits apply to UK and Ireland models and that regional specifications can differ. Check the specification for your own model and market.

What size memory card does my Galaxy tablet accept?

There is no single capacity limit for Galaxy tablets. Check Samsung’s support page or the specifications for your exact model and regional version; limits can vary substantially between models. Samsung’s guidance puts the examples above in context, but those figures should not be applied to a different model by assumption.

What kind of microSD card works with my Fire tablet?

Use a microSD card whose capacity is within the limit for your Fire tablet’s generation. Amazon recommends a UHS card or, for a non-UHS card, at least Class 4. Its generation-specific limits are listed above. A card can fit physically yet exceed what a particular tablet supports.

  • Exclusive “Made for Amazon” SD memory card - The only one tested and certified to work with your Fire Tablet and Fire TV

Also consider what you plan to store. Amazon says Fire tablets running Fire OS 6 and newer cannot install apps and games to a microSD card. Added capacity may still be useful for supported files and media, but it does not automatically expand the space available for apps.

SDHC, SDXC and capacity limits

The SD Association defines SDHC as more than 2GB through 32GB, and SDXC as more than 32GB through 2TB. SDXC uses the exFAT file system in the Association’s capacity table. These are card-standard ranges, not promises that every tablet accepts every capacity in them. A tablet’s own maximum remains the deciding limit.

MicroSD describes the card’s physical format; the SD Association gives its dimensions as 11 × 15 × 1.0 mm. Confirm that your tablet’s slot accepts microSD rather than assuming that another SD card size will fit.

How much storage should you buy?

Choose a capacity that stays within the tablet’s limit and suits what you will actually keep on the card. A smaller card may be sufficient for occasional documents or a modest offline media library. Large collections of downloaded video, music, photos, or other files may justify more capacity if the tablet supports it. Leave room for growth if replacing or transferring cards would be inconvenient.

What speed class matters for a tablet?

Speed-class symbols specify minimum sequential write performance under defined conditions. They are useful for matching a card to a host device’s requirements, but they do not promise a card’s maximum read speed—or a particular real-world speed in a tablet. Choose a card that meets or exceeds the speed class required by the tablet, and take the tablet’s supported bus into account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a large number printed on a package as a guarantee that the tablet will achieve that speed. The host device, card capacity, bus support, and use all affect performance. For storing and playing media, prioritize a supported capacity and an appropriate class; paying extra for higher performance makes sense only if the tablet and your use can benefit.

Tablet-compatible card examples to compare

Samsung identifies its EVO Plus and PRO Plus microSD lines as compatible with tablets. They are shortlist examples, not universal recommendations: verify the tablet’s capacity limit and check the specifications for the particular card capacity and product generation before buying.

Card line Maker-stated details What to verify
Samsung EVO Plus Samsung’s 2024 announcement lists capacities of 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. Class specifications vary by capacity. The maker lists transfer speed up to 160MB/s. Confirm your tablet supports the capacity you choose, and check that version’s speed-class specifications.
Samsung PRO Plus Samsung’s 2024 announcement lists 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options, with U3/V30/A2 ratings and sequential read/write figures up to 180/130MB/s. Check tablet compatibility and supported capacity. The announced maximum speeds are maker-reported, not assured tablet performance.

Samsung’s figures are based on controlled conditions and Samsung readers; actual performance may vary with capacity, host device, and environment. Treat them as manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. Product names and available versions can change, so check the current capacity-specific listing and warranty from a credible seller.
